In tank pump out again

:headbang: Well I have been trouble shooting a problem the last few days. my truck runs great when ideling and easing around but runs out of fuel when you gas on it. I unhooked the fuel lines going into the high pressure pump, jumped the relay to constant on and get nothing out of the fuel line coming from the tank. I have put 3 intank pumps on this truck in the last year. Pulling the bed is starting to get old.

Has anyone ever put an aftermarket pump (like for a carburator) before the highpressure pump. I know that they will pull thru the factory pump because I just put one on my friends 89 model that has a efi delete. I am thinking about trying this instead of putting another intank pump.

Do you have two tanks?
If so the pump would have to be mounted before the selector valve.
The Pump must put out less than 5 PSI pressure or you will rupture the diaphragm in the selector valve. It must also put out enough pressure to switch and lock the valve and enough volume to supply the required amount of fuel.

Three pumps in a year points to another problem causing the pumps to fail prematurely. You need to find out what is causing all the pump failures before you replace the pump again. Either you have an electrical problem that is causing the pump to run when not need or after the engine is off (possible bad relay), or there is a restriction in the fuel line/system causing the pump to work to hard. Since you have had the tank off before, i am assuming that you checked the tank and there is no rust or other contaminants that are plugging up the pump intake.

Sounds like there is lots of junk in the tank,
I'd check out the tank and have it cleaned...

I replaced the tank due to a leak. The tank that I put on was clean. I spent a day cleaning it. The truck only has one tank. I need to check the connection at the tank and make sure that i am getting poser to the tank.

I have also been debating on getting rid of the fuel injection on the truck. We don't have strict emissions in louisiana. Also I can trouble shoot a carb alot easier.

How come you take the bed off, id be dropping the tank out the bottom, at least it would be easier the 4th or 5th time, who is making the pumps your using? They could just be crappy ass remans or aftermarket junk

To remove the tank i have to remove the receiver hitch and the skid plate. It is alot easier to grab a buddy and pull the bed. The last pump was a napa pump. I still need to check the electrical connections. I need to pull the bed any way because I now have a fuel leak that i need to fix. I didn't do anything today.

Ahh, on my truck there isnt anything in the way of the tank, just the 2 straps. Hitch is way out of the way. No skid plate, if you have done it a few times, at lest you know the bolts come lose. Napa pump should be good, id be lookin into another prob then the pumps.

I put three NAPA Delphi made pumps in my Bronco II and then the guy at NAPA said that Delphi had a bad run on making the pumps. They got me another brand some place and it has been a very good pump. It turns out most auto part stores sell these Delphi made pumps for Fords.

So try to get a non-Delphi pump.
