So,tonight I finally graduated from High School.

It was hotter than H*ll out there and 4 or 5 of the people in the grandstands got carried away by paramedics because of the heat.Just about all of the graduates were using the programs to cool off.I was smart and had water bottles in both my pants pockets but it was still hot.I seriously hate Florida, and tonight really has me unsure of my future in this state. The heat is starting to really get old.The old people are another problem. At least it's over now and it's time for bigger and better things.

Congrats Shaun, it's a big step in to the real world. School/Life plans after graduation? And I agree, the zombies in training are the main reason I try to stay out of FLorida.

Congrats!

We're on track to have our first 80 degree day of the year today. Nice change from last year, when it was in the 90's and 100's already. The rain's been crazy though.

What is your intention as far as what you want to do with the degree, and what area you might want to do it in? Got some very good ag schools up this way, one is a local community college as well, with reasonable tuition rates, even for out of staters.

At this point,i'm still not sure what I want to do,I need to do a little more exploring into the types of careers I can get in Agriculture.I have deep roots in Farming, and would like to do something where I could work with animals and crops, preferably daily.Farming would be my top choice, but it just doesn't feed the family unless you have a large scale farm.I'm kinda leaning right now towards Agriculture Education.Alot of people are forgetting about where their food comes from, and those who raise their food,so I think it would be pretty cool to be the one who introduces kids to the history of where their food comes from.I've always had an interest in that for some reason. The school I just graduated from can't keep an Ag teacher for more than a few years, and the current Ag teacher lets the farm turn into a dump, and sadly I had more interest in the program than he did.For all I know there could be an opening there later down the road if I pursue a degree in Agriculture Education.

That's a good angle to take, not big money, but you can make a living at it. Our ag instructor just retired after 35 years of teaching. It does depend what stock you raise as to how well it can pay, but you don't have to be massive scale to make it. The problem is the cost to get in is so high it takes a very long time to pay back, and you have to compete with the established operators. Since my dad sold out all the equipment for the most part, it would be prohibitive for me to get in, plus I am not willing to take on that much debt with that much gamble to be able to repay it, so we just collect rent from an established operator.

The local community college I mentioned has an operating farm with the livestock and crops. The local high school does not unfortunately, but they do have the test plot for crops at the fairgrounds. it will be interesting to see what the next instructor will do with the well established program we have here.

Basically,I just want to be comfortable later in life.I don't really wanna be mega rich.I want enough to be able to raise my family without having to worry about bills and such, and be able to play a little with my trucks.

That's exactly why I don't want to make a living off of farming. It's more of a hobby for me.Most of my family realized it too,as they held other jobs aside from farming. My Grandpa worked at a cabinet shop as well as maintained the crops and livestock.

Our High School has an operating farm, but my college is in the middle of the city,so it has no farm. However,my AA degree isn't necessarily meant to teach me about Agriculture,it's to get me ready to transfer over to a 4 year university. So it really doesn't matter.Last year our old Ag teacher at my High School took really good care of the farm. This year with the new Ag teacher, there's trash everywhere, the fences are all fallin apart, all the plants in the green house died, the greenhouse is covered in mold, and the list goes on.It's just sickening. It's like he doesn't care at all.Me and my buddies had to replace 4 posts this year that the teacher wasn't the least concerned about. If these posts hadn't bee replaced, the cattle could've easily knocked them right down and gotten out.Three of the pens had a poor drainage problem, and it was a breedin ground for flies and mosquitoes, yet he never did anything about it.I went out there a few times myself and dug drainage ditches just to get the slop out of the pens.I wouldn't hesitate to say we probably have one of the worst Ag programs in the county.Maybe one day I can come back and change that around.
