Yep...but the basic ideas tend to be the same:
-remove the rust down to clean, bare metal
-(fill in missing metal, if necessary)
-prime/paint bare metal to protect from more rust.
The first two steps, of course, vary a LOT depending on where and how bad the rust is.
Or, like the previous owner of my 77 F250, fill the cab corners with spray foam and bondo over it. It worked for 15 years before the bondo fell off. It will get fixed right this time.
After you get it cleaned up and primed make sure you paint it, because primer is porous and water can get in and rust it again.
I had a buddy with an old '55 chebby that was bad mouthing the shop he had it primered at because it was rusting under the primer. I finally got him to understand that primer was a basecoat and not waterproof!!!
You have to Cut the rust out, and repair it with welding in NEW metal. If you just bondo over rust it will be a matter of weeks before it comes back through. Its like a growing tumor. Gotta cut it off. Its amazing to witness how fast rust grows. When i bought my truck i only had a couple spots on my tailgate. Well i didnt take the time to fix it or get it fixed. Now i barley have a tailgate..
Or 15 years if you fill it with foam and bondo it.
I don't like body filler either, I think that if you are going to fix it, you better do it right the first time. We new that the previous owner repaired the rust like that, but it surprisingly held up for 15 years. Now the paint is flaking there so it needs to be fixed good, but have too many other projects going right now. That one is on the list, though.
