Certain guys at work would hammer 'em through an old rail car's brake hose.
I tried that and didn't like it. Missed the cold chisel too much and so made
the job harder work IMO. :/ A "one up" pickup-frame-job wouldn't make
enough difference to matter tho.
Anyway, they'd put one on each end sometimes. A cold chisel on one end
and a 3/8" starting punch on the other. Some guys just never got the hang
of it and all the time had a big ol' scab on one hand. Only took a couple
good hits to my hand to "get it" back in the early 70's. {shrug}
It doesn't take too much. I ground my rivets down to where the head was completely gone. I took a large screwdriver and put the tip on the rivet and hit the end with a hammer.
