It can't hurt to bring up the differences with the other engines...it's good to know the differences...oh, and thanks for that info on the 429 truck engine.

I know the first models each had a 1" raised casting on the driver side of the distributor on both the 351m and 400. Dont know if it changed though.

I called a speed shop and they told me they could do some work and un-anchor it. Do you think it is worth it or should I just find a Windsor or something like a 460 or 429 and put the money into that? Would like everyone's opinion on this. Makes my decisions easier because you guys know what your talking about.

OH, yeah. DUH! LOL Yeah, I checked it out. I'm kinda....well...., not dumb but, don't know much about the technical stuff. I live in North Dakota, I see they are in Minnesota, wonder if it would be worth the trip to have them build my motor seeing they have good knowledge of the 351/400.

We were discussing whether it was a 351M or a 400.
Not the difference between other engines.

We are just waiting for the OP to show up and reply to my IN-DEPTH info.

Good job telling a new member trying to help the OP that his post was essentially worthless, and that this thread is about you gracing us with your infinite wisdom.

As for your IN-DEPTH info, it seems the OP was told waaaay back on the first page that the only good way to tell between a 351M and a 400 is to check the stroke. His valve cover sticker says 351M, and the only way to verify it hasn't been replaced with a 400 is, yes, to check the stroke. Which the OP was told before you got here and provided your IN-DEPTH info.

Also: You have been told numerous times to refrain from linking to FTE. We have no beef with them, however the fact that even mentioning us over there will get you banned makes us not want to create traffic for their site. Please respect this request of the owners of this site, who provide it to us all free of charge for our information and entertainment.

To the OP, I think dollar for dollar you will be just as happy building up your M as you would swapping to a W or a 460

I am a little leery of posting my location on a public forum. I used to live in Minot, until we were flooded out.

I call western ND, my home now, and always have. It is Gods country. ;)

351M/400 Boat Anchors? No I don't think so,
They are a rather good engine, and you don't really have to go nuts with modifications, they run rather sweetly in either a stock or lightly modified version. I have had two of them, one in a '77 F-350 dually and other one that I currently own in my '78 F-150 Ranger Lariat. Not bad for a so called "Boat Anchor" .
