Why do you want all these restrictions imposed?

Anyone under 18 can shoot a firearm in this country legally, and in most states by age 10 can hunt big game. There are still High Schools in this country that have shooting teams.

Monitor what speach? Talking about firearms and shooting is not illegal.

Neither is anything said in the Lounge or Fanatic forum. The only legislation that pertains to minors is COPPA, which precludes membership to only those over 13. If a teen agrees to the TOS, then it is the parents problem from a legal perspective. I have to know this because I own my own vBulletin forum, and I am worried just as much about the legal ramifications as you are....

good idea but admin will have to restrict it to 18 years and older for leaglity issues..

What legality issues are there for people under 18 discussing firearms? On monitoring and legality, provided someone isn't going crazy and discussing illegal mods (such as full auto) then there should be little reason for concern.

My thoughts...
1. This isn't a democracy..we get away with a lot but the whole point of appointed admins and mods is to keep a different kind of control.

2. I' don't see why it would have to be restricted to 18+ but could live with it. That's not a shot at any of our younger -18 members...i know liability issues.

3. I could see the admins say no to this because of 'Rants". It would need strict moderation.

I still like the idea. I love 3 things, trucks, guns, beer and my mutt..ok that's 4(not in order)and sounds like a redneck song but I'd hope the admins could try an experiment with it.
I know there would be time involved experimenting..that's why when my check comes I'm pitching into the supporter fund. NOT because of this idea...but because of an all around responsibility to the place and those feeding it.

Great post Carl.

1 the lounge is 18 plus because of the potential for "adult" conversation nothing more and the potential liability that may have to be shouldered by the owners of the site.

2 the fanatic forum is a paid forum which is why it is seperate and access is limited to those over 18 based on other issues.

3 this site is NOT a democracy. Neither is your house, or your business or your school classroom.

The issue is being discussed by admin right now and there are a variety of issues they are considering NOT just wether it should be a restricted forum or not.

When I hear something I will let you know as well as any additional information regarding how or why their decision was made based on the information they give me.

As an example one of the issues being discussed is traffic.

In my job the city employs a certain number of cops. They want a certain "presence" to be displayed, a certain "look" if you will. On a given shift there may be 6 patrol officers working. We all ride in seperate cars not in pairs. It has to do with the perception of how many cops are on the streets at a given time. If 6 cop cars show up it gives a different impression then if 3 cars show up. The same amount of work is being done but the impression left is different.

To take that concept to this site, we have a certain number of forums and a certain amount of traffic for those forums to go in. If we had a forum to cover every little possibility we could literally have hundreds of forums with little or no traffic in them as opposed to having less forums with more trafffic in them. The traffic here at the site is not going to change but how that traffic is managed is what the admins are faced with.

I didn't really read through this thread, but I'll throw my 2 cents in...if we did have a forum dedicated to firearms, I would be all for it. As far as rules/regs, I'll keep that to the mods and admins and hope they can figure something out.

It looks like at this time we are not going to add a gun forum. There were some concerns raised by admin but the biggest concern is traffic on the boards.

This is in no way meant to discourage gun talk in the hobbies forum as it has been done as of late.

There is also a chance that some of the discussions, hunting seasons, terrain gear etc may be regional in nature and thus better suited in the chapter forums.
