The grand marquis is definitely in need of some rear end oil. Like puddle on the garage floor need. It's not loud, deafening seems to fit better. My question is: should I re-gasket the pan and fill her up, or go ahead and plan on a rebuild?

I'd love to just re-gasket and fill it up but I don't want to waste my money if I'm going to have to rebuild it because that didn't do the trick. Opinions?

How long have you been driving it with no oil in it?

Probably all it DID need was re-seal the cover and maybe the wheel seals, but if you've been listening to it's deafening roar for five thousand miles, it's probably too late to save.

Rebuild nothing... Sounds like an axle swap would be quicker/cheaper/easier

Put some gear oil in it next time before you completely smoke the damn thing

And just for s&g I might try sealing it up and filling it. You never know.

If it has been talking to you, the damage is done, and likely worsened. About like my sister driving with a clunking, then a big clunk made for no motion... the pinion bearing had gotten so hot it left heat signature on the housing in the form of new colored rust.... Unfortunately, I had to salvage it due to dually axles being harder to come by and not so cheap. It had even spun the race inside the housing. No or low oil are way hard on them, as the axle is only lubed by dipping into it and slinging it about.

my wifes '97 blazer had low oil in the axles when we got it, i changed/filled with oil and the axle seals leaked. replaced the axle seals (yes front and rear) rear axle is noisy, spider gears look horrible, but weve been driving the thing 3 years now and its still going. has 203,000 miles on it. id put new seals in it, refill with oil and try it...it might go farther than you think. ive got a replacement axle for the blazer, i just figured id wait for the noisy one to completly lock up first, aint happened yet.
