getting first ford truck today

im going to pick up my first ford truck later this evening in town. love these old 70's. only ford besides my dads mustang i had when i was 16. its nothing special....at all. mean green rusty machine ha! its a 78, 4 speed, 4x4, longbed, 400. with a very rusty bed. the bedfloor is solid and alot of the sides on the inside. the main rust is along the seam where they connect. im thinking prolly can weld some support underneath for now. the fenders are rusty on outside of bed. had been sitting a couple days and fired right up at key turn. ran good and strong, no stuttering or jumpiness. i noticed wet inside rear tire so im assuming axle seal since the break fluid was full. and also need to replace gasket at passenger vavle cover. break lights and blinkers dont work so im thinking corrosion and grounds since rusty bed. headlights, dashlights, wipers, speedo, gas, and aftermarket oil pressure and engine temp all work. i just want it for coonhunting and puttin around in. and it was less than a grand. ill try and get pics later.

thank ya'll. the bed is prolly worse than it looks on the inside. you can take your hands and wobble the sides, you can see how the tail light is kinda angled. oh well, i checked the salvaged yard website bout 20 min away they have 10 or so 73-79 fords just dont show pics. maybe one of them has a better bed. and im not so sure on the brake lights, the switch is just hanging by pedal and wires and i dunno im not the best with electrical. and i need to get a cheap exhaust put on. one pipe is cut off right after the glasspack or cherrybomb and the other is cut off right before and missing the glasspack or whatever. they are ended not far behind the cab.

Congats. Just fyi ive seen trucks ALOT worse then that.

yeah i've seen worse too. havent really got into it yet. just got liability and plate for it today. never got into the brake light problem but i was at oreillys gettin some oil and just asked bout the brake light switch and turn signal switch, you know just if they have them in stock, can get them and how much and all...and damn they have one of the three brake switch options instock highest price being 9.99 and the freakin turn switch wasnt instock and was over 300.00!!! thats almost half what i paid for the truck ha! knock on wood maybe it wont be as bad as im predictin... thanks for the replies and for any help i need in the future with it. ya'll been there done that with them it seems like

You can get the turn signal switch online for $60. I just put a new one in my truck. Shop online. The parts houses charge way too much for some parts. Although autozone now has that Valuecraft brand that I'm not sure how I feel about yet. I bought an alternator for my truck from them for $30. It's still working fine. And a couple of other little parts.

well i went to a buddys house tonight and we just looked at it a lil. i plugged the brake light switch back in and still no lights. i havent checked bulbs, grounds and sockets yet. just messin around with it. the guy at parts store told me to get turn signal switch online cheaper just didnt say how much cheaper.

Here's the one I bought. Very good quality. Install should take about 30-45 minutes. You need a steering wheel puller. What I did was tape the new wire ends flat with some electrical tape to make feeding them through the steering column a snap.

thanks for that. im wanting to get the brake lights working more than anything. when i turn the blinkers on i get nothing in front or rear nor in dash but my lever does stay either up or down (left blinker or right blinker) on the column so would that mean my switch is still good since it holds?

No. Again, I had this same problem. No brake lights or blinkers. Replaced the switch and they worked. The brake lights go through the switch because one has to blink even when you're braking still.

oh ok, so you replaced only the turn signal switch for both problems? not the brake switch also?

Does it tick when the levers are moved?
