Gearing Questions

It all depends on the motor and what you wanna do. If you lined my 77 f150 with a hot 460, t18, 3.73 gears and 35" tires up with an identical truck with the same motor, transmission, and tires, but with 4.10 gears, the truck with 3.73 gears would smack the truck with 4.10 gears silly. (I know this because the motor im running came used out of another truck that had the tires that are on my truck and 4.10 gears. I drove it. mine performs better in every aspect) The point im making is that it depends on what your motor likes and what you want to do. many factors apply. How often will you tow? how big will your tires be? will the driving you will be doing be mostly city, highway, or both? personal preference- you want jump, or long legs? Ive seen the 300 I6 do well with 35" tires. Im not an expert, nor do i own an I6 with 35" tires, but if i had one and i was gunna drive it daily but not much highway like you say, id go 4.10. 4.88 would be to much rpms. And if you ever need any lower, 4L. =)

With the 4 spd manual you could run about any tire you want with that gear . Still way lower/slower than newer trucks with same rear ratio. Unless rock crawling be fine.

With the 4 spd You will have lower tranny gears 1 st 2 nd to 4 wheel in. nd 3 and 4 th r still on low end . And still get a few GPM 's

I ran 35's with no problem with that combo. dropped the rpms down at highway speeds and still pulled any hill here in 4th .

From a stop, what gear do you generally use in town?
Do you know the gearing for that T19?

(there were lots of different gear combinations for the "T18 Improved"! :)

I start in 2nd. If I recall correctly, I have a 6:32 granny gear. Does that seem right?

Yeah if it acts and sounds like "Ganny;)" then you've prob'ly got 6.32. :)

They say 145 lbs but aren't including the tail piece, they say the same for the T18.
I measured my T18 at ~150 lbs and that included the tail piece but it was just a
bathroom scales. It's nothing a guy can't lift and carry around. Best to plan the
move ahead tho is all, IMO & IME. The ZF measured 145 lbs which includes the
bell housing. The E4od was 230 lbs but when you add 29 for the flywheel and 23
for the pressure plate and 32 for the cast iron bell housing... 84 +150 = 234

The E4OD smashed and bent the crap out of one bathroom scales I had! LOL :)

ps- I should add the "T19 Granny" to my list...
Someday I might end up with a cool old T19. :)
