Fuel pump dilemna

fatherdoug

Tonto Papadapolous
I am leaking oil out from behind the fuel pump gasket(this is a first for me). I can change the gasket, but the fuel pump is about 5 years old(from NAPA). The pump has performed flawlessly, unlike the previous 5 I installed before this one. I don't want to replace the gasket, and then have the pump fail.

Since buying parts from parts houses can be a crapshoot anymore, does someone have a source for a reliable fuel pump, and no, I don't want electric.

I'm not after cheap, I'm after reliable.

Any thoughts, suggestions, crude comments about my ancestors, or my aversion to sheep, etc, will be welcomed with open arms.

Thank you, Sir! Does it come with a gasket, and is it a thick gasket material? Part of the problem is the paper thin gaskets that come with fuel pumps....... I can buy additional gaskets at the only parts house in town, but they are the same cheap FTF that comes with the pump.

Honestly...can't remember if one came with or not. And I've only ever used paper gasket...with a smearing of rtv black.

Thank You, Ben. I was referring to gasket material like Felpro vs cheap a** gaskets that come with the pump. The Summit picture shows a gasket with the pump, so I am assuming................ I have made my own in the past. They're not pretty, but they work.

Gotcha...my fuel pumps aren't that classy, they just get the paper/rtv treatment.

I've honestly never had an issue with airtex pumps. I know they're a cheap parts store brand, but they've never caused me any trouble. And I just bought a felpro gasket at the same time when I replaced my pump. Not an issue since.

You might want to give Tim Meyer a call Doug, his prices are comparable to Summit.

Please explain, Mark!

Sorry for late reply Doug - what i meant was try using a felt gasket if you are having a constant oil seep from around the pump - sometimes they'll seal better than paper and silicone.

I just buy a sheet of the good gasket material and cut my own. I toss those paper one away they leak to often and way to easy.

I've done that in the past also.
I got mine from summit and used the paper.

Never has this problem before!

Waiting for a reply from Tim Meyer. I looked in their vendor catalogs, but didn't find a pump for the 351M/400.

Thnaks for the explanation, Mark. I don't think I've ever used a felt gasket.
