Well it looks like im going to have to put my 429/ZF swap on hold because i havnt found a 429 yet and my BW T case M5OD tranny just took a **** and died this weekend. Started with a ticking that progressed to a shearing sound and now my T case chain is slipping constantly and the tranny is spitting gear teeth...

So im going into emergency mode and looking for a ZF and the matching BW T case IMMEDIATLY! And im literally gunna throw them in as soon as i get them because this is my DD...i would drive the cherokee but it doesnt have any windows...

I also figured id throw a 351 in while im at it...

So help me out what do i need to know about swapping in the 351/ZF/T case in replace of my 302/M5OD

Well the 302-to-351 should be pretty straight forward, just make sure you get the computer with the engine.

The M5OD to ZF shouldn't be too hard since you've already got the shifter and clutch pedals (which I'm assuming are the same).

Aside from that, you might need to get a new master cylinder (depending on if they're different). Then you'll need the flywheel for the 351/ZF combo (yes the flywheel is ENGINE SPECIFIC), as well as the pressure plate and clutch. From there I think you'll be good to go. You might also need to relocate the trans crossmember/mount and shorten/lengthen your driveshafts, depending on length differences between the two trannies.

T-case is self explanatory. Just find another BW1356.

Rust belt? Im in WA brother...

Skan, is it going to be the same T case for both? (I can never remember the BW T cases what with all their numbers)

351 is 52 oz flywheel and the 302 is 32 oz i think, or that might be backwards.

So what do yall think is a fair price for a complete running 351 and a complete ZF?

Yeah according to this page it'll be a 1356:

http://www.drivetrain.com/transfercaseappford.html#F250 Series PICKUP

As for pricing-- if you're looking for a READY TO RUN setup, be prepared to shell out some dough. In my shopping for ZF's the cheapest I've been able to find a used (non-rebuilt) ZF with no extra parts was around $400-500. And you'll need a few parts.

Factor in the running 351 and you'll start to approach $1k, especially since you dont have enough time to shop around for the best deal.

Forgot you gotta buy a tcase... A running tcase will be another $100-200 at least... A lot of times guys sell the tcase together with the ZF so you might be able to get a decent deal that way ;)

Damn...400-500 the cheapest ive found the guy wants 750 out the door and i have to pull it..and another 200 for the T case!

Im hoping to find a parts truck

Im still driving my truck and now all the vibrations from the T case is messin with the tranny which already had issues...i felt at least 4 gear teeth break/strip off today while driving.

I may actually have to put a windsheild in the cherokee and hook up the tranny and drive that! 13* this morning its gunna be colder than penguin balls if i have to drive that piece with no windows

Scott I said 400-500 was the CHEAPEST I've found. I've been looking for 2 years now and most are in the 600-750 range.

Parts truck is your best bet.

And by the way-- if you think a broken drive chain in your tcase is causing all your problems.... Just remove the drive chain!! LOL Seriously-- you'll have no 4wd but 2wd should still work just fine if I'm not mistaken.

Anyone know what performance clutch options there are out there for the ZF?
