Let's hear your stories!

Here's mine - I just posted this on the flathead board and thot I'd share it here too.

More on reliability of flatheads:
In 2001 I put my project 48 F1 on the road and drove from nw Montana to Denver, then Wichita, Michigan and finally eastern Ohio. On the way back home I lost a waterpump in central IL. Limping back to the last exit opened up an old crack between the #6 cylinder to it's intake valve pocket.

After getting a wp delivered overnite and installed the next morning, I still had to deal with the crack which could suck the system dry in about 1/2 mile.

Solution? I removed the thermostats, left the rad cap loose and set off with a couple gallons of water for the last 1500 miles home. I made it with no problem other than watching the temp gauge closely and adding water as necessary. This included climbing multiple passes in the Rockies. It sure made a believer out of me.

On that trip I had the privilege of spending time with rumbleseat, Jim Marlett, Arrowsmith, Rich Steyh, our own BillB, Paul Selfe and Sopp!!

This past August my son and I took a 1200 mile round trip to WY with 'ol blue.....the flattie ran great, no problems at all. Didn't overheat, used no oil, and got about 15 mpg (seems like we had a head wind both ways LOL). The 5 speed makes 70-75 mph possible, but not much fun on our rough roads. 65 seems to be about right...
