f250 super cab 4wd frame question

Are there any differences in one from 1976 vs 1979? I have found one in better shape than the one I already have. I have already collected parts for the 79 and just want to make sure they will still fit the 76. also is there a way to to tell what year one is other than the vin number? Some one told me the front spring hangers are different but I have yet to see any that look different than what I have? I also have this posted on the FTE site.

The frames in certain places are different

In 77 they changed to the frame type width in 78.

Isn't 33 1/3" between frame rails Dennis?

^^^Whoops...I wasn't even paying attention to that, I was thinking reg cab. I didn't know that about SC's either.

OK. Help me out here please. He says it was a 76 F250 SC 4wd. VIN# X26skd56586. Is that not a 76 vin? I asked him to measure wheel base he says it is 155" just like what my 77 F150 SC is. Now I am really confused. Is there any other way to tell. If someone can tell me I will drive to go see it. Thanks,Jeremy

I thought the CREW cab had a 155" wheel base. If that's the case, the VIN would start F26.

The short bed SC had a 139" WB and the long bed SC had the 155" WB.
The short bed CC had a 150 " WB and the long bed CC had a 166.5" WB
( thats out of a 1978 ford truck brochure. )

Your best bet would be to find two people that have the year model in question and have them measure.
I've got a 1978 SC.

There is no such thing as a High Boy Super Cab. *

X26SKDF6586

X26 = F250 4WD Super Cab.

S = 400 2V

K = Kansas City MO Assembly Plant.

DF6586 = 1979.

33 1/2" distance between the rear frame rails (behind the cab): 1973/76 F250 4WD & 1977 F250 4WD (before serial number Y20,001 (all-High Boys).

37 1/2" distance between the rear frame rails (behind the cab): 1973/79 F250 2WD / 1977 F250 4WD from serial number Y20,001 (not a High Boy), 1978/79 F250 4WD.

* High Boys: Regular & Crew Cab w/a Flareside or Styleside Bed, or a Chassis & Cab (no back of cab equipment).

Bill, Highboy was not mentioned

Only a SC 4x4.

Were there not 4x4 SC's ? and did they not have different frame widths in some areas?

Uh huh...

Only a SC 4x4
Which the OP thought was a 1976.

Were there not F250 4x4 SC's?
1977 F250 4WD (from Y20,001-not a High Boy) and 1978/79F250 4WD.
Read thru the posts again kiddo, someone alluded to narrow frame rails on earlier Super Cabs.

What year Super Cab had narrow rear frame rails? N-O-N-E = NONE!

Dentside narrow (33 1/2") rear frame rails: 1973/77 F250 4WD High Boys / 1973/79 F350 Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase.

All other 1973/79 F100/350's have 37 1/2" rear frame raills.

And...the OP thought he had a 1976 F250 4WD Super Cab, when in fact, it's a 1979.

That's why I said there was NO such thing as a High Boy Super Cab.

See I learned something. Thanks to all who posted. Now I have another question. iwas told sometime back that dent side duallies had narrow frames. True or false?
1973/79 F350's with 33 1/2" rear frame rails: 1973/76 Super Camper Special; 1973/79 Regular Cab Trailer Special; 1977/79 Regular Cab Camper Special. All on the 140" wheelbase.

There is no such thing as a dentside DRW pickup. 1980 was the first year Ford offered a DRW pickip-F350 Styleside only.

All previous (1953/79) DRW F350's were sold only as a Chassis & Cab, and none of these were on the 140" wheelbase.

You say Elberta, while I say Alberta. Both are correct.

dentside cab/chassis duallies had narrow frames as well as the f250 'high boy' , the 78/79 2wd..f350 crew cab..speaking from the experience of owned trucks, but my 78 f250 4wd crew cab threw a wrench in things being that it has duallies on the wider frame, thus requiring wheel spacers to push the inner tire away from the 3" wide rear springs...you can usually see the narrow frames by the 2-1/4" wide rear leaf springs

also the s/c frames as well as the f350 2wd crew cab frames are taller than reg cab frames
