Exhaust tip question

Ok this is gonna sound rookie.

But what do Exhaust tips do? Do they have any kinda of function other then just look good and cost a bunch of money?

I've always been under the impression that they alter the tune/tone as well as opposed to just an exhaust pipe. The tune/tone can be altered slightly depending on length and diameter. You can buy cheapies for around $20, but if you're looking for polished stainless, then it'll be more expensive.

I want deep sounding exhaust no rasp or pops just a good deep sound, so what do I get? no tips big tips short fat tip?

I believe the longer the tip, the more mellow the sound. And with a bigger diameter, I believe it increases the sound and reverberation. I usually go with an 18" long 3.5" diameter 45* cut.

Yep thats about whats on my truck and I think that they cause the exhaust sound bounce around inside and give ya a better tone.

That red things looks like more back pressure added to the end of the exhaust system to me.

Call me boring but I'd just get 18" long ones that have nothing like Ben talked about.

Not a fan of resonators...to me it makes everything sound like ricer fart cans. If I were you, I'd just get a good set of headers, 2.25" duals, muffler/gpack of choice, turn them out in front of the rear wheels and get a good set of stainless tips (to prevent rust and decoloration)...then call it done. That's the setup I use and I couldn't be happier.

The best sounding exhaust I have ever heard is on my 67, the previous owner put it on there, but it sounds amazing.

If you go on youtube and search for "67 F-100 ranger" it will be the first to pop up(it'll also be from me, old ford blue).

Its stock car manifolds, completely dual 2-1\2" pipe with vortec mufflers and 20"\3-1\2" tips with a 45*.
