Exhaust Opinions

I have no idea what to run on my 77 truck. I may sound kinda vague on this point, but I'm going to run true duals and want the truck to sound cool, but not so loud going down the road. I want to be able to carry on a conversation and listen to the radio. But, I also want something that sorta rumbles when cruising around to at least show I may have something under the hood. I looked at the Flowmaster's but unsure of what series to get for what I want. Any good suggestions.

Well I'd say glass packs obviously...but stick in the 24-36" range...with a 3" diameter. But if you're wanting to go the muffler route...Magnaflow like UNRULEE got or Hooker Aerochambers. I'd say with the engine you have...I'd go no less than 2.5" pipe. I like the pipes exiting before the rear tire...but you may want them to go behind. What headers are you runnin Buck?

I'm running the chassis exit shorty headers from Broncograveyard. I was going to run 2.5" pipe, but just not sure of what muffler/glasspack to use. The exhaust will most likely have to exit before the rear wheels since I have that big rear fuel tank.

Go with the classic Flowmaster 40 series for the classic rumble without being too loud or obnoxious.

Glasspacks sound alright at first, but wear out and get loud and cheap sounding.

Real mufflers, FM or otherwise, do not wear out like that.

Well I'm not going to turn this into another FM bash-fest...but Buck after all the time/money/work you've put into that thing...I'd highly aqdvise staying away from FM's...there are better quality mufflers out there, there are mufflers that offer better power, and I'm sure you want to be unique and not like every other high school kid. So I'd say anything from Magnaflow, Gibson, Hooker or Cherry Bomb (probably the cheapest pricewise and quality wise of the bunch...but I love 'em) would be the best sound and bang for the buck.

Yeah, I don't wanna make it a fight about FMs...

The Magnaflows and Hookers are good too, just do yourself a favor and definitely stay away from the glasspacks.

In an effort to not hijack Buck's thread...go with no less than a 24" gpack and try to keep the diameter to 3".

Well the pipes will be 2.5 so do they make em in 3 inch diameter. Why 24"? Sorry to highjack Buck.

Well first...I wouldn't go over 2.25" pipe for stock or even mild build. Secondly, yes they do make 3" pipe. Lastly, 24" is where it starts being low rumble at idle and still makes some noise on the throttle. Anything smaller than that...you'll be making some good noise. Before I put the 12" CB's on Red, I could still set off car alarms with a no-name 18" gpack. And I'm not really sure if anybody makes gpacks between 18-24".

Hijack away.......I don't mind. Sometimes other ideas come up and gets the mind turning. Since I have no idea on what size of muffler does what, I'm assuming the larger the muffler size the deeper and quieter the sound. I was looking at Magnaflow's website for the stainless mufflers. What would be a good size? And yes Ben, I don't want the highschool loud sound....If I'd want that, I'd just straightpipe the thing and be done. I've hesitated to get glasspacks because the ones I've always heard were too loud for what I want. The deep rumble sound is what I want.

I hear ya Buck...alot of guys do go for the shorter/bigger diameter gpack simply for the sound...but I've heard guys with 44" gpacks on their truck, and you can barely tell the truck is running. And I feel muffler wise, FM's just cheapen the sound, sure the 40/44 series sounds good, but then you have the noise factor. I think the for your parameters, you can't go wrong with any of what I suggested earlier. Now you just gotta youtube them to see what they actually sound like.

Well thats what im lookin for. Whats the best brand? Cherry Bomb?

I like CB's...they just sound the meanest to me. But you also have FlowTech and Dynomax, among others...and you can always get cheapy generic brand (like under $20) from your local muffler shop...but they have a tendancy to break down reeeeeeeeeally quick and rust like nobodies business.
