Emissions inspection

My 08 Ranger has 56,000 mi on it. 3.0 automatic.
The state has started me on emissions test.
Passed with flying colors.
I see it's got two converters, that could be an expensive
repair.
How many miles before these tests start picking up
problems?

Pat, cats can last an array of years depending on a number of variables. I had an Explorer with 360,000 miles and the original converter, but my grandfather's Town Car had one fail at 40,000 miles.

As far as the test goes, most of the time, if you don't have any check engine light or pending codes you're good to go. (I'm an inspector here in Georgia, but the test is roughly the same all over)

Most people say 100k miles is around where you should replace the cats..
