EEC4 is smart....just not that smart. The egr system is engineered to make the intake flow less "volatile". This prevents spark knock or "ping". The manufacturers in an effort to meet emissions set at the time, advanced timing for more power, then use the egr to combat the ping.

Are you saying that the "plugged-up EGR burnt-piston problem"
is primarily a result of pinging and not from the lean mixture?

Is the EEC-iv system reacting to and correcting the lean mixture?

{edit: deleted some dumb comments;}

How much of a timing change we really talkin' here anyway? :)

How much advance has been added to the timing to compensate
for the EGR's dilution of the air/fuel mixture? :)

Well the piece I fabricated disintegrated and then the compression fitting rolled out while I was driving. It's time for me to order the whole kit!!!

Cool. :)

I tried making my own out of resistors but kept getting a check engine light.
The code was 333? (what Ryan said to shoot for) but the EEC never learned
to let it go for some reason, so I put the stuff back on.

All said and done was about 47 bucks.

I can't be very accurate about power gains. If there are any it's not noticable (but the small stuff does add up). My problem is that I had it running with an open header for the EGR port after my tube that I fabricated disintegrated. So I ran it stock, then modified with my part, then my part fell off, then I 'fixed' it with these parts.

Unfortunately I now I have CEL. The dummy part they sent me is not doing what it was promised to do. It is, however, running smooth as silk.

Yeah from what I've heard, the dummy plug will only keep your engine running okay but won't turn off the CEL...

At this point I think it might have something to do with which EEC you've got.
The EEC in the '91 F150 never learned not to turn the CEL on. :/ Tried and
tried and gave up on it. :/ The CEL is just too much for me to ignore! ;) YMMV

The EEC I swapped into the Bronco from the '90 F250 didn't turn on the CEL
with both a 33 code and an 84 code. :) Lit up before, with those and
couple other codes tho, so it does work right, just didn't see 33 and 84 as
high priority?

But I fixed both those anyway, just found out this evening, got an 11 code. :)

Cool. :)

During my experimenting with the '91 F150 I found the hole in the plenum
chamber to be "close enough" to the right size for 3/8" tapered pipe.
So I just tapped it and screwed a plug in it. :) A 5th grade neighbor-boy
was over so that made it fun. :) I'd run it in and ask 'im if it was enough.
...and do whatever he said. Stop and try it or keep going. He did good
after a few tries, the plug went in flush as anything. LOL :)

Was using a 1/2" speed-handle with a 3/8" drive reducer and a socket on
it for the tap and an Allen "socket" for the plug.

A guy -could- screw the EGR head right-back-down, if needs be. ;)
