EGR Delete

Anyone done this? Mine is on a 1994 351 5.8L motor. I may not end up deleting it, cause I'll talk to my exhaust guy here shortly, but I was wondering if anyone has done it and if they did, what parts they used.

Any tips or parts sources?

My uncle did this on his 93 bronco (302)
He took off his heads and grinded off the nodes, and then changed his manifold out and did some computer work..

I did. I used a built 393, carb dizzy and long tube headers. :p

I guess I need the plate for the manifold to block off the airflow. I can plug the headers no problem... I sorta wanted to have this truck ready to drive soon though, and don't have time to sit around for 2 weeks waiting for parts from RJM injection

I blocked the one I had off.Just took a small piece of sheet metal and cut it to fit under the EGR and made a gasket the same size and blocked the port off.
No ill effects occurred actually got a bit better MPG

Eliminator from RJM Injection. Make a block off plate which is real easy to do. I used the factory bolt with some washers as a spacer and some black RTV to seal it up so there was no leaks.

Why do you want to block off the EGR if ou dont mind me askin?

I have all of the egr stuff gone, and the valve sittin there plugged in, and no codes, no lights. Runs great. Ill take some pics of them. On most of my trucks, all the vac selonids are unplugged also, no codes.

Emissions stuff is worthless, no need for it.

I was considering deleting the system because the egr hook up on the header isn't in the same position. I'm trying to fabricate a new pipe first, but we'll see how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'll probably need to fab something up.

Off topic, but make sure you get plenty of pics while you're doing your install.

Take your pick... ;)

The thread size and count on this plug is right at least...

Just to try it out, all that needs to be done, is pull off then plug the vacuum
line. That way the computer won't be fooled into thinking the EGR is working
when it isn't. Since it leans out the mixture and advances the timing a little
when the EGR is thought to be working.

I wonder how many vehicles have leaky pipes etc and aren't working right
anyway. :/

I've yet to try it. I checked my codes and got "111" "all's well" so now I'm
at least ready to try it out but have been driving my '75 F150 the very little
I go anyway. :) Not sure when I'll be driving the '91 F150 next. :/

The fitting in the manifold unscrewed easily from the '91 Bronco and the '90
F250 parts truck. I used a big old clunky 1+1/4 inch open end "plow wrench".

I'm bringing this back up again. I'm ready to order some parts to get it moving, but honestly Alvin I can't read electrical diagrams very well. I think I'm going to go with RJM Injection stuff. My truck sounds too much like a tractor because of a little air leaking out of it.

On my 302 I used a resistor pack to fool the computer to thinking it was closed and made a plug for the lower intake. Made a block off plate for the upper and closed it off. No check engine light and it runs good.

Ryan,

A little food for thought. A properly working EGR system will actually improve your fuel economy in comparsion to the same engine without an EGR system. The EGR system improves the engines efficiency by reducing pumping losses and the reduction in combustion temperatures, resulting in a more efficient burn rate. By reducing the combustion temperatures, a more aggressive timing curve may be used as well to improve performance. If the EGR system is shut down, the ECM uses a retarded timing curve to eliminate pinging caused by the higher combustion temperatures.

EGR systems got a bad reputation when they were first rolled out in the early 1970's because they were only controlled by ported manifold vacuum. These systems were rapidly phased out for more controlled systems.

If you are going to purchase an A/M EGR elimination kit, RJM does have a good reputation for their products.

There are horror stories about the EEC-iv burning holes in pistons
because the EGR is plugged but the EEC-iv don't know it.

If that's the case, why doesn't the EEC-iv listen to the O2 sensor?
Can it not over ride its own "lean-out programming"? :/
Is the EEC-iv really that stupid? :/

Anybody -actually know- one way or another which is true?

Were their burnt pistons from other changes, not the plugged EGR?
Like ignoring pinging/knocking for example.

-------------------

I have been experimenting with some of these things because I need
some hands-on experience for my later attempt at a "junk yard" MAF
conversion.

Later the plan is to stroke a 351w and modify the MAF system.

I want to understand it for myself, not be simply told what to do. :)
Telling me what to do is cool (understanding -why- is my responsibility).
LOL :)
