E4OD Problem

10
0
I have a 1993 F-150, 2wd with the E4OD behind a 5.8. My trans shifts through all the gears and goes in/out of OD as it should. The problem I am having is a slow shift from one gear to the next higher gear. It's as though it is trying to slip between gears, but when the shift is complete there is no sign of slippage. My question is, will the installation of a "shift kit" help this problem any? Thanks for any input.

The E4OD is pretty notorious for developing sloppy shifts-- especially the earlier ones. If it feels like maybe the trans is just a little sloppy, a shift kit might help clean that up. If it really feels pretty nasty, like something is malfunctioning, then a shift kit might just accelerate the process and lead to transmission failure. Depending on the brand/style shift kit-- they generally include components that either increase line pressure to tone the shifts and bring them to a better place in the RPM range, or they include shift springs for making the shifts faster and tighter (or both, like mine). You can imagine how installing modifications like these in a failing transmission could lead to trouble.

If it were me-- I'd leave well enough alone and squeeze as much life out of it as possible. In fact, you'd do yourself a big favor if you drained and refilled with new Merc/Dex III-- might even clean those shifts up YelloThumbUp

Publication Date: AUGUST 11, 1998

LIGHT TRUCK: 1990-1994 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150, F-250, F-350,

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit a no 2-3 upshift condition. This may be the result of cross-leakage caused by distortion of the control valve body separating plate.

ACTION:
Perform diagnosis and, if necessary, replace the control valve body separating plate. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Perform diagnostics as outlined in the appropriate Service Manual.

If condition still exists, remove the control valve body separating plate.
Remove both separating plate gaskets.
Wipe excess oil.
Examine the separating plate for deformation in the intermediate band servo area.
NOTE: THE SEPARATING PLATE GASKETS MUST BE REMOVED TO SEE THE DISTORTION.

If distorted, replace the separating plate with a new Control Valve Body Separating Plate (F4TZ-7A008-A).
Install new Separating Plate Gaskets (F4TZ-7C155-A and F4TZ-7D100-A) and a new Oil Pan Gasket (E9TZ-7A191-A).

The truck has 375K miles, don't know how many are on this trans, surely it is not the original!

Blacksnapon,
Thanks for the TSB notice, that is something I can check next.
