do I really need this?

I have looked on line and it seems that this is the charcoal canister. There is a metal line running to it but it is open at the top. Looks like in it's current condition it is doing nothing. Is it something I need to restore or can it be removed? Thanks for suggestions. Donald.

Mine is "missing" on the '78. :D I don't remember the exact routing, but make sure you have isolated vacuum sources if it is removed.

In my own world
It's the vent ( simplified explanation) for your gas tank
You should at least put a filter on the line to keep it from drawing moisture

The hole in the middle is a vent that normally has a press on cap. The other was a paper hose that runs to a fitting on the air cleaner. Unless you just want it stock, I'd go with Dusty and cap the middle one and put a filter on the other.
