Distributor Adaptor

Alright...got a follow up question. Got the adapter on, old one was kinda wallowed out. But there is still some play between the adapter and dizzy. I 'adjusted' (bent) the clasps for a better clamp and that worked some...but how much play is allowable? Any advice on tightening that bad boy down some more?

I never knew there was any sort of adapter until this thread, but can you bend the clips more than you did to make it tighter? That's what I did to get my cap to fit tighter on my distributor when it felt a little loose.

^^^As of right now, there's probably 25* bow in the clasp.

Oh that sounds pretty far to me probably wouldn't be able to bend much more. Glue it to the distributor maybe.

A little play is normal.

The small cutout on it is larger than the adjoining spot on thr dist.

Enough play to cause the rotor to come in contact with the metal on the cap and cause shavings?

Autozone lists it as a distributor cap cover on their website. I don't know about by you but it was special order here. I was going to suggest seeing if they have one to compare to yours and see if there was any sort of difference. It also said it was only $6.99 or something like that so probably made in China as well.

Well I got the distributor from NAPA and the adapter from O'Reilly's (they had it in stock). The Ford adapter fit like a glove on the old Ford dizzy, but wobbled like hell on the new NAPA dizzy...so I got a new adapter, not quite as much wobbling, but still there.

Something is not right. Is the distributor bent or misshaped?
You may have a bad cap don't get the cheap ones with the aluminum contacts get the ones with the brass.

Distributor looks good...and is brand new from NAPA. The cap to the adapter fits perfectly, but the adapter to the distributor has been an issue with two different adapters now. To me, it's almost like the clasps are too long, because before I bent them, they were just rattling around. Now after bending they are at least a little tighter.

I'll go ahead and just tap out the retaining pins and throw new clasps on there.

Is the rubber grommet for the electrical wires flush with the housing where the adapter sits?. I had this problem on the distributor I got from Napa for the 72 just shaved the rubber down with a razor blade till it was flush.

Might be raised a little...so you're saying that acts as a pivot point?

Yep exactly and with the adapter on yours it makes it worse since the cap sits higher than mine does. Just shave it down and make sure theres nothin else gettin on there to make raise it up and make it wobble like grease, dirt burs, or left over casting material.
