Whats the difference? Seams that a KOER test has alot more steps that require a bit more concentration. Which do you all prefer?

"Self test" is a general term used when speaking of ANY code reading on these trucks.

What you're trying to ask is "whats the difference between KOEO and KOER tests?"

KOEO = Key On Engine Off
KOER = Key On Engine Running

The difference lies in which sensors the tests look at. The KOEO just test some of the sensors to make sure their readings are realistic, even though they're not real engine readings (for the most part). If one of the readings is WAY off it knows the sensor is bad, even without the engine running.

The KOER test will test the sensors while the engine is running so that it can make sure that not only are the sensors giving realistic 'hypothetical' readings, but they're also giving readings that make sense while the engine is running. That's about the most simplistic way I can explain it.

KOER also gives you the option of testing injectors, that one is kinda fun :)

Bottom line, if it throws a CEL -- the KOEO test will read the code (it's stored in the computer memory). If you're just looked to do as much testing as possible, go with the KOER test.

Keep in mind, the KOER test is STILL not comprehensive. The capabilities of the OBD-I system are pretty limited in comparison to OBD-II.

Both are valuable. Both have their good points, both have bad. The correlation between the two (and dont forget the continuous memory codes) is what you need to concentrate on. The ford analyzers also have freeze frame data available (what everything was doing at the time the dtc was set).

What does it plug into? Without a "data link connector" under the dash, does it go inline with the computer??
Now, it can only look at one "pid" at a time, but its put in line at the pcm connector (like the break out box).

there's a plug on the righthand fender well for OBD I testers. my Suntech plugged right in and ran great..opened the fuel relay, clicked the injectors, coded me bad fuel pump...

Yeah, but we were data and freeze frame data. You wont get that through the connector you are thinking of.
