Dash mounted speed control-control?

Most of my modifications are only for me, but was thinking this one might
be for a few others since it removes the need for the speed control-control
to be on the steering wheel, opening up a whole new range of steering wheel
options. :)

Studied up on how the control works with just three wires, fiNgured out the
right hand controller (with its three buttons) could be modified to do all the
work needed -to suit me-, YMMV on that.

The test drive will be today tho, so I might be here backpedalingmyassoff
later. LOL :)

One problem is tho, -the buttons aren't interchangeable- so even tho the
functions have been changed, the upper and lower buttons don't say "on"
and "off" the way I'd like 'em to. :(

I'll post a picture later, if it works. LOL :)

You can figure all that out, but can't figure out how to make the button say what you want??? Geez Alvin, you're a trip. Spray them black, stencil on what you want with white.

Hmmm...
Uhhhh...
No thank you. ;)

Not enough 'Alvin resourcefulness' for you? Alright how about this. Take some old fishing lures, get some plaster of paris. Make a mold of your old buttons, manipulate the mold to say what you want on the button. Then melt and pour the old rubber/plastic lures in the mold. Pop those bad boys out, and you have new buttons and they'll be egonomically pleasing. Is that more your style? HAHAHAA.

Yeah, now you're getting close! :)

The buttons were made by having the white letters surrounded by
new black plastic.

Oh, and you're gonna love this one...
The "CST" button needs to have "HORN" on it rather than "OFF"! LOL :)

Need to recheck my wiring plans and figure out what went wrong. :/

Dumber than you thought in AZ

I could always cut you some small white decals in vinyl to stick on
those buttons... :D
Hmmm...
Uhhhh...
I really appreciate the kind offer...
But, no thank you neither. ;)

ps- The upper button (RSM) is convexed and the lower button (CST)
is concaved.

pps- And I'm not going to operate it by reading the dangged things
anyway, I'm going to operate it by feel the way I operate the brake
pedal and steering wheel etc. Kinda nutty but true. ;)

ppps- So far all it operates is the horn! LOL :) Hadn't driven it yet tho
so not sure what the other buttons operate at this point. The wipers,
blinkers, speed control? :/

Wow you're trying to put blinkers on the steering wheel?! How are you going to cancel it after you complete the turn?

No no no, I'm trying to put a -horn button- on the -dash-! :)
Oh wait, I done did that. :/

Just now fiNgured it out, I messed up not taking into account the
wire-color-swap Ford did at the large-curved column connector.

I was looking-past that to what counted and plumb forgot about
the "crossed" wires. :/ DBu swaps to the LBu/Bk and vice versa. :)

"it's a Ford thing" ;)

Now if I would quit fooling around on the internet, I'd go fix it. ;)

The dash mounted controller works great! LOL :)

...but being the first time I ever used the speed control,
found out the speed control surges, real bad tho. :/

Acts like the "Dana Speed Control" I installed in 1976 in
my '75 F150's been acting lately, as if the potentiometer
inside the servo is dirty.

Got any suggestions before I go and tear the servo apart? :)

ps- I rasped the curve out of the dash/vent so the switch
would lay flat. I messed up and didn't scan the circuit-board
after modifying it and now it's kinda too late for that since
it's wired in through that little hole in the dash. :/

There's only one switch, both the right and left buttons are connected together with a harness.

Did'ja know (prolly not) that when the 3 spoke sport steering wheel was installed, the only way you could have cruise control was adding the dealer installed unit. The switch mounted to the turn signal handle.

Cool, didn't know-ed that. :)

I do know, that I don't like 'em mounted on the turn signal lever tho...

Here's a wiring diagram showing how they make it work with 3 wires...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/etc/10-03-7.jpg (big for printing)
...the SC's control box was designed to react to certain voltages which
were easily made using resistors. Clever, huh? :)

I don't have a resume function with my new setup. Didn't use it in the
'91 F150 anyway, since it was twitchy, learned not to use it. Never used
the coast function, from what I could figure out, it just plain ol' didn't
work. Maybe all those problems from just dirty contacts? :)

Anyway, check out the "switch positions" list:
1. On ("horn relay battery" to 151)
2. Off (151 shunted to ground)
3. Set (151 shunted to ground through 680 ohms)
4. Coast (151 shunted to ground through 120 ohms)
5. Resume (151 shunted to ground through 2.2k ohms)

Ok, now that is all done, on to the hard part...
I have to pick out a Grant steering wheel I'll like for a long time.
Any suggestions on how to go about doing that? :)
Already got the Ford Installation Kit.

How about the 3 spoke sport steering wheel?

Same-o same-o as 1977/79 LTD II/Cougar/Ranchero/Thunderchicken/Granola/Monarch/Versailles/Mark V/Bronco/Econoline/F100/350 and...it's genuine Ford.

Polarbear: I had a '60 Crown Imperial Southhampton 4 door sedan. Had all the same features as the '59 including the 'toilet seat' on the decklid.

It was massive...parked EZ...in a city block.

Never knew that...so a sport steering wheel out of any of those will work in any of the others? Damn all this time, I thought a Bronco/Truck wheel had to be used. I know I've passed over a few other good sport wheels because they didn't come out of a Bronco or Truck. Now I feel stupid.

You aren't, you are in the majority...prolly 95% of the people that own these trucks, Bronco's and Econolines don't know either.
The steering wheel's part number is D7OZ3600A. The center emblem is the only difference, as Bronco's, F100/350's and Econolines have the blue oval.

On some others, there's a laurel wreath outlining the Ford crest, on 1977/81 Mustangs (I forgot to mention it used the same wheel) there's a nag's head with some falderall in the background.

btw: There's actually two wheels, t'other is D7OZ3600B w/soft foam covered rim. T'other wheel is leather wrapped.

If y'all had the parts catalogs, you could see what I see. Notice I said catalogs. Bronco parts are in the 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog.

T'other catalog is the 1973/79 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog. Both are available from hipoparts.com.

Seeing as that's what you're looking at, it's safe to say those cd's have the most up-to-date part numbers? $21.95 per disc doesn't look too bad.

The '73/79 car parts catalog was scanned from the final edition of 11/88. Sadly, I can't say that for the '73/79 light truck catalog.

It was scanned from the first printing of the catalog (8/1978), so the part numbers are not as up to date as the final edition of 10/88....which is only available on microfiche.

Dealers today no longer use printed catalogs or microfiche...usually these catalogs end up in the TRASH! Suggest you waltz on by a few dealers in your travels, see what you can find.

I'm guessing that wheel is out of stock and you are suggesting
I look in wrecking yards for one? :)

If so, did they hold up better than my '75's wheel did? LOL :)

The wheel is as obsolete as the Dodo bird.

How they hold up, I haven't a clue, but I would guess that since one has a leather wrap, the other a soft foam covered rim, in Arid-Zone-a, neither would hold up very long.
