Bleh. Front axle seal is out...

So I noticed some leakage on the driveway close to the inside of the tire and took a closer look... yup, damn axle seal's leaking and good too. Has anyone done the front axle seal on a D60 before?

Any advice before I start tearing into it?

Thanks in advance ;)

I've seen the front axleshafts pulled without removing the kingpins......gonna have to tear everything down to bare bones on her when ya do it....the only thing you should have sitting there before you pull the axleshafts is the knuckle. Or hit up Tony.....I think he's got pics on his photobucket....

Hmm according to AZ, I can pull it w/o removing the knuckle...

Thanks for the links, Dennis :)

Unfortunately, the seal is on the inside of the pumpkin. You need to pull the differential out to get to it. The seals are pressed in from the inside of the tubes right beside the bearing caps for the diff.

The seal is located in the center section of the pumpkin. Each axle has a seal. It's not like a rear diff wear lube is allowed, and needed to run out to the wheel ends.

Uhh so the fact that I have it leaking out the end of the axle means I need to replace the bearing seal too huh?

Not sure what you're asking, but there will be two seals inside of the pumkin that are accessable once the carrier is removed. Those are the one's that you'll need to change.

Also DO BOTH SEALS while you have it apart. The seals can't be that expensive and if you have one leaking the other one isn't too far behind. It would suck if you did just the one and a month later the other side starts to leak!

That is the axle tube seal, the one at the bearing. A front axle doesn't have the seals like a rear axle does. The ones at the bearings are the oil seals.

If I tear into it, it'll be when I have a locker and lower gears in hand... it'll just have to wait :/
