Post Whores Make Me Sick
Finally got around to installing my trans cooler last weekend with Trista's dad. It was a little bit of a hassle since the new one is a different size and mounts on the top and bottom, as opposed to left and right (like the old one).
It was also a hassle because the new cooler has 1/2" pipe threads while the old one accepted a 3/8" flare fitting. We couldn't find a 1/2" NPT -to- 3/8" flare anywhere... So we got 1/2" NPT -to- 3/8" NPT, then couple that with a 3/8" NPT -to- 3/8" flare. Wrapped everything in teflon tape, made some brackets, and threw it together. The install went pretty well and when we got back to Trista's house it was still dry as a bone.
So I drove the truck to Davis and check it again when I got there-- the bottom of the cooler lines where they make a 90* angle and head out in different directions had drops of ATF hangin' off
It looked like a pretty slow leak so I left it until this weekend when I could take the grill back off and have a look. Took it off today and found that the leak was happening somewhere around those brass fittings (duh). The topmost thread-to-thread contact (1/2" NPT) was damp, as well as everything below. So it could either be those 1/2" threads that are leaking and dripping down, or EVERYTHING is leaking. Called Brad and tried to brainstorm a good solution that DIDN'T involve removing the cooler and making a mess-- couldn't come up with anything. I asked if he thought smearing RTV all over the threads might help, since it's a real slow/low-pressure leak. He said try it.
Well I had to rush home back to Davis to meet Trista so the RTV only had about 2 hours to dry (or NOT dry). I crossed my fingers and headed home. Got to Davis-- ATF everywhere again, like before
Next step is to research online and find an actual set of 1/2" NPT -to- 3/8" flare fittings and hope that I can make this crap go away
