New guy here........ Just bought a 1976 F-150 XLT Ranger off ebay yesterday. I've been building 67-72 chevys for years and the Ford bug hit me about a year ago. To be honest I fought it for a while but really started looking hard for a 6th gen Ford about 3 months ago. And I'm happy to say I forund just the truck I wanted. 76 unrestored laser stright bodied F-150 with the 390 / C-6 and factory AC. Anyway I have researched all the info I have been able to find but so far I have had a hard time getting axle ratios for this series of trucks. Does anybody know had to get that info short of pulling rearend cover and counting teeth? thanks

I taped a string about 5' long to the drive shaft, marked a tire and pushed it one wheel revolution and counted the wraps around the drive shaft!!!

There is a tab on the axle with the ratio, or you can get us the axle code off the drivers door post!!!

Welcome to the site!!!

^ ^ AXLE codes as listed on the Warranty Plate. ^ ^

The Warranty Plate is located on the face of the left door below the latch.

These codes are for trucks without Limited Slip.

1959 thru today cars & trucks.

If the AXLE code begins with a letter = Limited Slip

If the AXLE code begins with a number = no Limited Slip

Wow Thanks, Alxe code is 14J trans code is G so I'm seeing it has 3.00 gear, I knew it had to be a tall gear because of the why it cruises on the hwy. Any idea what the J behind the 14 means. I take it the G is for C-6 trans. thanks

J = Power Steering

G is not the trans code for a C6. G is the trans code for all A/T's thru 1978.

This is the way Ford did this back then. One has to know what trans came with what engine.

1968/76 F100/350 360/390 = C6.

Wow thanks Bill, you are quite the mass of infomation, So the 14 does mean it has 3.00 gear? I drove the truck home 153 miles of interstate 70 to 75 mph, I could tell it was a very tall geared truck. I'll say this; This is the first 390 I have ever drove are even road in. I must make masave torque. I could not belive how good the motor felt. I fully intend to restore and drive it so I welcome the 3.00s. Everybody I talked to before going and picking it up said 8 to 9 mpg was all it was going to get. Nobody belives me but it got 15.8 mpg.. thanks for shearing your knowlage.

Glad you got her, and the 390 can be a pretty sweet get up. As for the mpg's...I might be able to buy that...keep in mind though, if the tires are smaller than stock, that means they're rotating faster and giving you a false mileage reading.

Very true, My wife followed me home, 08 Tahoe so I felt hers would be more correct than mine so I'm going off her trip meter. But there was only 3 miles difference in both. I read 3 miles more than she did. I'm shocked about the mileage myself, but that was what the numbers said. May never get that good again. This old rig has got to be the most org. truck I have ever come across, speedo showed 56.661 when I picked it up. 1 owner he said he was 74 now, bought it new had oil change rec. for years showing mileage so I feel sure its correct. Paint faded bad but body great.

Uh huh.

When one considers that the official FTF show off usually answers all these posts...finding one that I could do that in....is amazing!

I'm thinking the 'CA' is for Canada...as in Alberta where I think Dennis lives.
