AOD Q's

When we droped the tranny to get to the rear main seal, my over zealous/curious neighbor who was helping me pulled the TQ off and with it out slid the input? shaft. It slid back in place and we reseated the TQ, but is that normal for that shaft to loose like that?

All right cool I was worried there for a sec, I don't know jack about auto's.

Next Q. somebody replaced the TQ in '03, anyway to run the #s and see the stall on it, and why would someone beat on it w/ a hammer? You can see tool marks ware it was hit.

They slide right in and out. However, there are two steps going in. The first step falls into place. You need to rotate the TC slowly and add a tiny bit of pressure and it will fall into the second "notch"

My guess? Someone tried to beat it into the second "notch" in order to get the transmission to bolt up to the engine.

If it is not back in the trans where it goes...the installer has big issues. I have seen it hold an engine locked where it will not turn over before (several times).

The hammer marks are probably the result of an angry person who could not get it to bolt up correctly or maybe went as far as locking the engine from turning. :)

It wasn't locked b/c it ran and drove when I got it. It still needs a tune up though so it will idle right. You have to keep it running at first, before you can let off of it but it'd idle at 500 rpm.

Is the oil pump as big of a PITA on a 2wd as a 4wd?

I did not mean it was locked when you got it. I meant the person who installed the TC didn't know about the second notch and beat it into place.

I have seen them not in the correct place and it keeps the engine from turning (starting). I would imagine the person had to pull it all again and that is when he beat on it (in anger) so it would bolt up and work.

Does that make sense? I have a hard time explaining things in type.

I have no clue how to find out the stall on it.

I have seen factory ones that run around 1,000-1,200 RPM stall (depending on what it was in). Who knows what was put in there.

I have always replaced them with whatever they came out of the factory with. Then again...the ones I did were for me of family and not hotrodding.

I understand, but life's no fun if you cant do a little hotroding now and then.

Update

Ok so I finally got my truck back together again...

Next problem is I need the gasket/ o-ring for the tranny dipstick tube... For where it go's into the pan, I checked w/ auto zone the best they could do was to bring the tube in and find one to fit...

anybody know a part # or wtf I did wrong, b/c fluid runs/ pumps out as soon as you poor it in or start the truck.

To find the stall just power brake it, where the rpms stay is where the stall is at, dont go crazy, or do it for a long peroid, as you can smoke the trans from that, prob like 2500 or so. You sure its hammer marks, not the turbine inside it, they look like hammer marks.

Sounds like you got everything covered...
The o-ring is just a typical o-ring nothing fancy about it. Dont remember the correct size of hand...

Yeah i gots it covered. No thanks to you... :D

Yeah I know, just given ya a hard time. lol

I really didn't have any problems other than the ones I posted, just took me forever and a day to do it.

Still gotta bleed the brakes and get stickers for it along w/ a ses light, but all that trivial now though.
