Airflow to the engine

NO Not an efan thread.

BUT...

I was wondering if putting some of the aftermarket "billet" style grills with what "APPEARS" to be less opening for airflow causes the engine to run hotter then the more open style grill. AND if it does run hotter is it enough to be detremental to the engine?

Any thoughts? I ask because I have been looking at aftermarket grills for my truck.

I'm no expert.....

but the grills aren't nearly as ristrictive on light duty pickups as they are on compact cars. I don't think the manufacturers get nearly as close to the 'minimum' they need to keep the motor cool.

The one on my truck appears to have less area for airflow than a stock one, but I haven't noticed any difference.

Read your owners manual! Mine say nothing in front not even a screen! So I would look at the overall design of the grille to determin any airflow restriction!!!

some of the really bright chrome ones i've seen are practically solid metal with a few air holes drilled in them. i always wondered how they let enough air though, but they must work ok. as long as your're not towing a house, i wouldn't worry about it, just keep an eye on your temp gauge i guess.

second thought, i used to have a scangauge - can you hook one of those (or something like it up) and have it give you engine temp readings. pretty sure it did. FWIW, one of the best things i bought...still kicking myself for getting rid of it

Actually Aaron, most engines will see a slight increase in performance (notice I said slight) running a tad warmer. 208deg tstat in a 7.3 psd was in a magazine for mods for mileage. So a slight restriction in cooling would only make your A/C work a little harder.

You can always make a ram air set up like Hurst did for the 68 Olds
