On the compressor, where do we add the freon and are there special fittings?

The mechanic said that the normal fittings on his recharge kit that he's charged on our newer vehicles are different and he'll go back to his shop and get the other fittings, but wanted to check and make sure where to charge....is it on the top fitting in the picture since the one on the bottom says discharge?

Or is it somewhere else away from the compressor? He said he has some buddies that are more knowledgeable with these ac systems than he is and will double check with them, but I thought I'd check and see since I know a few dents on here have AC....I know Buck just went through fixing his....I think, if I remember correctly.

Thanks,

Your gonna charge the system through the low side valve.. I'm not sure where on that gen truck the low side is..

Are y'all vacuuming the system clear, checking for leaks, replacing valves or anything?

When you recharge low side pressure with AC on max should be around 35-45 depending on temp and humidity.

We talked about doing the full service, vacuuming the system, but where everything was put in new (NOS) 2 years ago we thought maybe all it needed was a quick recharge. Should we do vacuum it? All of the hoses and valves look brand new...the compressor looks new and the clutch works.

And that's the problem we were having,,,,,not knowing where the low side was.

Found this manual (just posted pictures from only 2 pages) on nostalgic air's website for 73-79 truck ac systems:

Hard to tell....but from the looks of it, that top port does look like the low side.......will have to do more research and maybe even call them.

The hose from the evaporator(upper hose in your picture) is the low pressure side, per the '78 shop manual.

The large hose is always the low side, small pipes and hoses are on the high side.

Discharge will be the high side, making the other side suction, which is the low side. You can charge it right at that fitting. They make adapters to charge those r12 type fittings with the newer 134a equipment.

^^^Would he not need to know what the current system is charged with before adding 134a to 12??? Being that the parts are 2 years old, I'd assume it was converted to 134...but don't the two operate at different pressures throughout the system???

Yes, Ken. The one that is labeled "fitting here, under the hose in this picture."

Thanks!

As you know, AC was on our must haves for a dent and I inquired before heading down and was assured it was converted, but how would I know? It seemed to blow decent cold air on the ride up, but definitely not Cadillac cold like the 77, so I assumed it just needed a charge. [confused]

R134 and he had to use an adapter, but those bars that are protruding opposite of the valves acts like a shut off valve, but it seemed to work just fine.
