8 Reasons Why The Electric Car Will Not Be A Success Anytime Soon

8 Reasons Why The Electric Car Will Not Be A Success Anytime Soon
The electric car has been an area of debate in the auto industry for as long as anyone can remember.

On paper, electric motors are fantastic: instant torque, one moving part, and easy maintenance.

But in the real world there are a number of factors that combine to exemplify the weaknesses of the electric vehicle (EV).

In fact, just yesterday Morgan Stanley cut their forecasts for EV penetration in the mainstream market and downgraded shares of electric car maker Tesla motors.

Thanks for posting this Brad - very interesting to see that explanation against subsidies for EVs

Until they figure out a self power device for electric, they will be simply a gimmick.

perpetual motion. figure it out and become the richest man ever.

You have any idea how strict the government is on "free energy" with things like perpetual motion i could only imagine...

I know a guy who recieves a now monthly phone call from a person who call's him self a FBI agent. He simply checks on the guys device that builds free energy...

It takes about 2 months to charge a car battery. But its done for free... In his garage.

Many years ago , my brother read an article in a magazine, popular science I think. About a guy that designed and built an electric motor that produced enough power to run itself and a few other things. Never heard anything else.
I would venture to say the big power companies wouldn't want anything like that on the market. Could you imagine every house having a self powered generator.

You can't make energy from nothing. It has to come from somewhere...

But the electric vehicles blow my mind. Can you imagine being stuck in a winter traffic jam and your battery quits??? Holy smokes! You'd get really cold, really quickly!

I was referring more to an effective photovoltaic, or fusion nuke or such things. Simple laws of physics and thermodynamics dictate that you can never get 100% efficient, and you can't get something for nothing.

I doubt fission will ever be a portable source. If it did more than simply produce heat over time, it would be more useful in a portable situation. Once it gets started, it doesn't tend to shut off, it will still be hot. It also requires careful monitoring and control. Fusion theoretically requires less mass. The problem of course again is control and recovery. Another reason fission likely won't be portable for general transportation is the use in less pleasant ways, and the environmental hazards it poses.
