400 -> 300 Swap

I have a 79 Bronco with a completely worn out 400. For as much as oil leaks out of it, the oil pan might as well be mesh. I didn't let it get that bad, I bought it that way. :D

Anyway, I am giving the 400 to my dad since he wants to rebuild it, and in exchange I get a completely rebuilt (stock, less than 5000 miles on the rebuild) 300 I6.

My question is, does anybody know what would be needed to swap the factory air conditioning from the 400 onto the 300?

I would think hoses, and at minimum compressor brackets.

I would have only though brackets and mounting plate. I didn't know there were different A/C setups based on engine size.

Hey Josh,

You know most people usually swap out to a v8 right, not the other way around.....

Hoses change due to location. If it were v to v, I think it could be made to work, but when you go alongside the motor like a 6, the hose length changes.

Worn out and dead v8 for a good rebuilt ***FREE*** I6...I don't blame him.

Yeah...after I posted I got thinking the issue was probably hose length.

It's not free,he bought the Bronco!smilietease

Nothing is ever free in the world.Except welfare for the poor.

While I don't see your logic, you did get me and I usually follow that rule. The 300 isn't free because he's trading a 400...I understand that logic. That said, he's getting a great ROI.

I have had enough of your snide insinuations! :D

Thanks for the info guys. I will start hunting for some 300 mounting hardware, and see what happens when it comes time for hoses.

I am guessing its the same compressor, but does anybody know?

Generally, back then was just the York compressor.

Looking through the NPD catalog, there is no distinction between engine sizes on the compressor or clutch, but there is a distinction between years, AND whether or not the A/C was dealer-added or not. With factory A/C, the same compressor fits 69-79 models. As already mentioned, the hose lengths would be different.

Dealer ac is tough as there is no certain parts for them. I recently discovered the 88 is dealer air, the hose ruptured, which is just a clamp on setup. The fill ports are on the compressor, pointed right at the valve cover fill neck, gonna be a pain to convert to 134 with the port location now since it blew out the hose. I had never really paid any attention to it, it looked almost like factory air.

I have no idear if its factory, I never even looked at, other than noticing it was there. It wasn't a deciding factor in the purchase. It uses the factory controls, did the dealer installed have different controls?

Here you can see the dealer add on A/C controls

This is the Economy version of dealer installed A/C.

Note the panel to the left of the intact glove box that contains two A/C registers and the two A/C switches.

The Deluxe version of dealer installed A/C is not the same in any way, shape or form as the Economy version!
