2007 F-250 steering gear issues

I have an 07 SD XL 4x4 and the steering gear suddenly developed between a quarter to a half turn of 'slop' in the wheel, Now it had a very small amount when I got the truck but yesterday it seemed to let go to the point its at now, I have driven the truck 50 or 60 miles this way and it hasn't gotten any worse. My mechanic checked the front end and said all was as it should be and it's for sure the box. Could not find an OEM box in the region so I ordered a Redhead rebuilt for it but won't see it until at least Friday and was wondering if anyone had ever experienced this? and if so did it get worse before you fixed it? I have to drive the truck 15 miles to my mechanic when the box arrives and was wondering if it will make the trip, any thoughts? Thanks, Allan

Update! I have my new Readhead box on the truck and I have to say, I'm impressed with the handling and it's up to the test of time and mileage to determine if the extra money these boxes cost is really worth it. I give the box an A for handling, I've never owned or driven a vehicle with this tight and responsive steering new or used. I'll report back when I have some miles on it.

The final cost of the new box after the core charge reimbursement was $446.00 and IIR the labor cost was $131.00...I had no choice, my box was shot (about half turn of play in the wheel) This box has turned out to be the best money I've spent on my SD to date. I have no affiliation with Redhead I'm just a satisfied customer. The box has zero play in it now.
