1976 F-100 4x4 Similarities to F-250 of Same Era...

Ok. Looking at a 1976 F-100 4x4, with the 390 BB and 4 speed. Not much comes up on this truck when googled, but what does suggests it has many major similarities to the F-250's of this era. So how close to a 3/4 ton is it? Could it handle a 8' plow? Towing capacity?

Chances are it's not a 390 as they were never put into 4x4's. It's probably a 360 as they look the same, only way to tell is to pop a plug and measure the stroke.

The GVW difference between the 100 and 250 is quite a bit.

Here are some links for info:

This is for a 1978, but it gives you an idea of the options for snowplow prep:

I will have a look in my 75 book tomorrow and see if there is any info there.

My opinion is that an F100 would not be the most suitable truck for plowing or towing a lot.

Nice!

I didn't get a chance today to look in my 75 book, sorry....should have time tomorrow.

Some of the 100s up till about 75 and maybe part of 76 were a lot lighter duty than the 250s. Transmissions, if a 4spd were Borg Warner in the 100s, New Process in the 250s. Transfer cases on some 100s were a real light unit made by Dana. They were more or less just an in/out box. You were either in 4wd or out. No locking frt hubs if you had that transfer case. Down here in Texas I know nothing about a snow plow, I guess that's the plow you mention. As for towing any F250 from the 70s will pull like a mule. The F100s although plenty of motor, were a lot lighter in GVW.
