07 F150 Heated Mirrors

I just got back from my trip cross country into the cold parts. After having used them I noticed my Drivers side one looks a little different.

Let me see if I can describe it.

When I look into it, sitting in my drivers seat I can see a dark square inside the mirror with the outline of what I assume is the unheated portion around the outside of it. That make sense? Like I can distinguish between the heated and unheated portion of the mirror.

I don't recall seeing that distinction before. Maybe I did and don't remember. How would I test the mirror to make sure it is still functioning?

I will try and see if I can snap a pic to show it but I don't know if I can get it.

Any ideas?

Put your hand on the mirror and tell me if its hot.. The mirrors went get pretty darn warm to the touch..

Well the passenger side *Seems* to get hotter then the drivers side. I will have to wait till after I get it washed and in the garage for a while to do a better test of them.

The drivers side feels warm, could be ambient warmth though, while the passenger side is obviously hot.

You have a problem with the heating element.. Regardless of ambient that thing should be hot when you touch it.. Ford mirrors are notorious for getting very hot.. I can turn my truck on and my mirrors will be hot to the touch..

Probably have to replace the mirror.. Maybe check the voltage at the wiring to ensure its getting 12Vs.

hmmm...Ok. I could swear they both worked before the trip. Hard to tell on the trip because I did not really spend a lot of time sitting still in weather cold enuf to freeze anything on the face I don't think.

Wonder if it overheated or something and burnt out? could cause the mirror discoloration? They will go off automatically I assume?

Thank god for the 3/36

It's possible. If you have warranty then take it in for sure.. They come on anytime you start the truck or shut it off.. So it's very possible it just burned out.. Not real common but possible.. They pull a very low amount of amp..

Ah wait.. F150, sorry.. F250/350 are auto on.. Your right there's a dash switch.. I'm going with original thought, bad heater element. Only true way to verify is testing the 12V lead for power.

Well whatever the cause I know thos much.....

It done be broke, cause I can fry an egg on the passenger side and not sure I could melt butter with the drivers side one.

Guess it's a trip to the dealership sometime.

Thanks Storm
