I know Buck had a great thread started about this and I'm going to have to look for it, but wanted to see what you fellas thought I really, really need to keep handy on this little trek.

Tools?
Gas can? He said it has two tanks.....btw, how do I use the second tank? is there a switch or any tricks that I should know about?

My list already:
-Garmin
-Books on CD
-Tunes
-Blanket
-Cell phone/chargers
-Sunglasses, hat
-Fanny pack (to carry all the necessary things in and out of places, like cell phone, money, wallet, maybe a pocket knife which I'll need to pick up on the road, etc.)
-Oil and funnel
-Flash lights
-Mace

Thanks for any help and suggestions!

I'd bring a small socket set, maybe a couple of screw drivers and pliers.

As for the dual gas tanks, I always like to try out the one not being used when you pick it up by running a few miles on said tank to make sure the pump is going good. It'd be a shame to throw gallons of fuel in it and find out it doesn't work! There should be a switch somewhere... couldn't tell you exactly.

Like Austin said, all the basic tools, a few good all around things like adjustable wrenches and vise grips... Some oil, tranny fluid, etc.

Fanny packs are gay. That is all.

on them old fords the fuel tank selector switch is or atleast should be located on the dash on the passenger side of the heater controls(location on my 79 any ways) i have a 94 piece craftsman tool set that has all sockets from 1/4" to 13 or 15/16ths. also has 2 ratchets some allen wrenches and a magnetic screwdriver with removable bits. has saved my butt a few times on the road

Ya, aside from having good tunes, sunglasses, hat, cell phone, gps etc. I started to put together a road trip toobox. I have extra fuel line, clamps, heater hose, radiator hose, extra ignition module (yours has MSD, so no need there), screw drivers, socket/wrench set, vice grips, utility knife, T wrench, small jack, jumper cables, small electrical kit, fuses, flashlight, tranny fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, funnel, fuel filter and oil. Of course a spare tire is always a good thing and a gas can. Seems like a lot, but on long road trips you never know. My road trip to Nebraska last year with the 77, I even brought an extra alternator and starter I had just in case. I'm not saying that these trucks are going to break down, it's just if you are in the middle of no where on a weekend than it's better to have more than enough than not. I have AAA, but depending on where you are at, it can take a couple hours for a tow truck and most things can be fixed right there on the road.

Didn't think about the screw drivers and pliers....a nice 50 piece tool kit at Wallyworld for $19.95 should do the trick for some of the basic tools.

What about a guy hopping out of a rig like this with a fanny pack? Still gay?
Gay they may be, but convenient, which is all I care about.

I like to take a plug kit and a small 12 volt compressor

Ooooh.....never thought of a compressor....I have a small one I can stick in my duffle bag so I don't need to buy one there....good thinking, thanks.

I'll take a picture of the dash and see if the manual is in the glove box.

If its factory midnite is right. Many aftermarket dual tank setups had the selector next to the seat.

Buck, thanks......think I might pick up a small jack at Wallyworld, but don't see any set up for a spare tire, so may just rely on AAA for tire issues.

Tranny and brake fluid, antifreeze, and jumper cables I didn't think of.....that big diamond plate tool box will come in handy.

I wonder what the airline is going to charge you to ship all that equipment to SC.
:)

I wonder how much it would be to check in a 36" tire on 15" rims. smilietease

I'll bring a few things I have at home, but most of this stuff, like the gas can, oils, and small tools I can get away with buying cheap at a local Wallyworld on the road.

Thanks fellas!!!:wavey:

I would love to fly there and come with you! Good luck mate. Most my road trips I've just winged it and had the best time ever!

I like winging it as much as the next person, but maybe when it comes to destinations and time frames and such....but I like to be prepared to make the trip as uneventful as you can possible make it!

Oh, and I expect heaps and heaps of pictures!

ABSOLUTELY! I wouldn't have it any other way!

If you have AAA, at least you know you can get some help and like I said, most things can be fixed on the road with these trucks. Driving on the 4th, there might not be much open for parts, but at least there should be some Walmarts along the way and truck stops. The only other thing I was thinking about is your phone charger. Hopefully the lighter works for the charger, but if not you can fix that pretty easy.

We've always had and have AAA....so that's comforting.

The guy sprung for power windows. ...if he didn't put in a working cigarette lighter plug the his priorities are messed up. :)

Do they have kits to hook up a plug adapter to the battery?

You can get plugs to hook up pretty easy. If nothing more. but a cheap extension cord type and cut the end off...
