It just says it's commonly refered to as modified. And its Wikipedia for Christ's sake LOL. AFAIK, Ford didn't designate it as modified.

That's frickin Wiki (as Bill would say, followed with a face palm). Nowhere in Ford literature does it make mention that it stands for 'modified'. As I recall Bill telling it, it was just a marker to differentiate between the W's and C's.

Along with a laundry list of other slang terms that the M stands for. But if it does stand for modified, leave my stuff alone Ford, you did a horse chit job modifiying it.

I thought they did a good job on the Wiki article.
Seems pretty obvious the M is short for Michigan/MCC.

And FE stands for Ford Engine and an "MEL engine" is a
Mercury Engine Lincoln engine. I always use that one
to show how silly anything other than Edsel don't fit so
good.

I know I drive an old Ford because my engine has a
"Y-block design", but it ain't a "Y-block engine".

The main reason I know I drive a Ford is...
Bought it new and it's got about 250k on it and it's never
broke down and left me stranded anywhere, ever!
