Why does it stall?

So i bought a 79 F150 with a 302.

Since i bought it, i have been having issues with keeping it running.

It was built up, i'm not sure what all was done, but i know for sure it has a racing intake, and has a .498 cam in it.

From there, it's anyone's guess.

As of right now, i have the Idle set to 900 RPMs.

If i put it into gear without feathering the exhaust, it stalls.

If i turn the RPM's up enough to keep it from staling when put into gear, it slams into gear and barks the tires.

I've already changed out 4 different carburetors. And i get the same result from each carburetor.

I know that the power brake booster is shot, but i don't know if that would be causing anything to be this off.

Ideas?

Check for vacuum leaks

I was hoping we lived in a world where everything was easy....

The hunt is on i suppose.

Oh, to add to that, i noticed today after my truck sat at idle for a few minutes that the fuel filter was nearly empty, and there was relatively no gas flowing into it. Then once it was ran down the road and brought back, and shut off, the filter was full again.

Does that change anything?

If your power booster is bad but the vacuum line is ok I dnt know why it would stall out, looks like it would only stall with a bad vacuum line thats undone/broke or not getting enough fuel. I know that my vacuum line plug on My 78 f250 that goes into the pwr booster was broke and leaking, but my truck still made it home after 4 hours of driving it home.

I relise you have a fairly wild cam, I would suggest trying to set the speed up to 1000 rpm and see if that helps any. ?

When you have a pretty wild cam, its hard to even have the right amount of brakes and vacuum supply, since yours are power, You may need to run a vacuum tank to store the vacuum when things need it?

My oldsmobile that has a 468 lift cam and it will NOT run if the speed is below 900 rpm, it will simply die. Yours is more wild than that, so may require more.

Hope that helps some

Vacuum vacuum vacuum. I'd start with replacing lines (all of them) and the booster. That cam probably plays a big part too, and if the other fixes don't do enough, you might wanna look at getting a reservoir.

Turns out it was a mixture of two problems, was a leaking booster, and the timing hopped something like 4 teeth.

Sadly, i no longer have the truck. She will be missed, but i couldn't afford to keep her going, figured it would be best to give it to someone who can keep her alive.
