What 4 banger will bolt-up to an 89 2.9L bell housing?

I have an 89 Ranger with a 2.9L V6 and 4speed w overdrive. I want to replace the engine with a 4 cylinder for mileage and dependability. What 4 cylinder engine(s) will bolt-up and be easy to get running?

None will bolt up.
Only the 6 bangers 2.9,2.8, and a 4.0 the 4.0 will trash the transmission.
The bell housing pattern is different from the four banger.
