Well I think my trans is toast.

I was drivin the truck yesterday and when I threw the clutch in it made a real loud buzzin/vibration untill I took it out of gear. It does this in 3rd gear only. I had the thing "rebuilt" last summer cause it would rattle so bad in 3rd. When I got it back it was still rattlein but I just drove it cause I didnt feel like dealin with the ass that "rebuilt" it. I also had the motor off and had the clutch in and it rolled a little ways and I heard a clunk clunk clunk comin from the trans. It drives fine but it rattles really bad in 3rd with my foot off the clutch and when I throw the clutch in for a little bit it starts buzzin/rattlein till I take it out of 3rd. I dont know how to work on transmissions so I think well just try to find a new one. I think what might be the problem is that the input shaft vibrates inside the case. When I had the motor out I wiggled it and it moved around some. I dont know if I should go get it rebuilt again or try to fix the input or get a new one. The motors comin out again anyways cause it wont quit burnin oil so thats not a problem. BTW the motor dont have more than 5,000 miles on it and the clutch and pilot bushin are new we also replaced the throwout bearin too and put lots of grease in there. Any and all help is appreciated thanks guys.

If it does it only in 3rd gear I would guess it's the synchronizer for that gear. If you already have money invested in a recent rebuild I would try the synchro first before dropping money on a whole new tranny.

Ya think its just the syncro? Itll do it anytime I have it in a gear and throw in the clutch and rev it up but its the worst in third. Like I said I dont know how to work on transmissions so I think Ill just try to find another one. Theres nothin I can do as far as warranty wise with it cause the warranty was only 90 days. Weve had to cut our losses in stuff like this before that wasnt done right so its nothin new.

Thats great thanks for the link I think its the bearing for the input thats gone now that I can see it like that cause it had alot of side to side and up and down movement in it. Thanks again for the help and the link.

So it does do this in all the gears? I thought you only heard the grinding in 3rd.

For a rebuild I think you'll need a press and bearing pullers in addition to basic tools. I never rebuilt one, but I've read about it and remember seeing that those tools were needed.

Good luck!

Well its the worst in 3rd but its in all the gears if I throw in the clutch and rev it up a little bit. I talked to dad and he says that well get another used one to throw in there and be able to drive it then I can mess with the one thats in it now. Im pretty sure that its just the input bearing and race and nothin else (hopefully). Ive been thinkin about it and thats what makes sense to me cause weve been goin through throwout bearings like crazy So I think whats happenin is the input bearing is either gone or wobbled out and its makein the throwout bearing do all the work.
