Hello,
I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT
Prairie driven, and has survived many Winnipeg Winters.
It is very special to me as it was my father's. It got my son, our kitty Oreo, & I back to BC with a full load in the back, and towing a full u-haul.
Tough little truck<3
I had driven it all winter in -50 weather with no problems in Winnipeg.
Before our trip it had a tune up, & an oil change.
It was shortly after arriving back to BC, unloading it's heavy load, and driving it around for the first couple of months with the tank on e, as I was too broke from the trip back to keep the tank fed properly, it started to loose "guff"
It would loose power "literally" and shut down on me if I had to make a stop. I dreaded stop signs and red lights.
Mechanics kept telling me it's the transmission, and I need to replace it. But my Dad had it replaced only a couple years before. One day my son's friend, a newly budding mechanic, informed me with confidence, "It's your fuel filter."
I went to pick up what we needed. Took him like 15mins, and my truck was running great again. It's been a year since.
Didn't drive it much over about 1/2 yr, but would start it every now and again.
Since then I have had my truck tuned up for the Provincial Inspection.
- Passed.
But in the past few months my truck has been acting up again.
I went to a shop and had a new fuel filter put in, but this time it didn't seem to make a difference.
On start up it's stalling out. Especially when I go to give it some gas.
Sometimes it will back fire black smoke, and will choke up, and die out. Then I need to restart again.
On putting it in drive it will creep out of the parking space, and will literally drive faster at first, at a slow crawl, with me barely giving it gas, than if I try and give it more.
It seems when it gets warmed up it starts to run fine, except, if I need to stop at a stop sign, or red light. Then, on the go, it's back to a slower pace, but again, will pick up speed when it warms up.
My Dad's truck is very important to me. I don't have lots of $ to spend but need to make it healthy again.
Do you know what could be the reason for my truck's lack of power for speed when waking up?
It seems to be getting more & more tired, but hasn't given up.<3
