warranties and DIY oil changes

I'm asking in regard to my '09 Ranger (4.0 V6 with 60k powertrain warranty), but I'd imagine it'll apply to any/all new Ford vehicles.

What's the deal with changing your own oil on a vehicle that's still under warranty?

Can I just keep a record of when I did it, and the receipts for the oil and filter I used?

Both in strict terms of what's covered by warranty, and also in terms of "dealer goodwill", if that could be an issue.

When my engine blew and had to be replaced they asked me to provide receipts for my oil changes and they eventually accepted that

Stoopid question though- it costs $29.95 to do a LOF at the local Ford dealership up here. Is it worth it messing with it yourself?

The "local" Ford dealer will never see another thin dime of mine.

The closest one I'm willing to deal with is an hour drive from home, 45 minutes from work. Cost isn't the issue- except in the dead of winter, it's a heck of a lot easier to do it myself.

I just roll up to Suburban Ford on a Saturday, have a cup of coffee, and it's done in about 20 minutes. Doesn't get much easier than that.

*Edit- Oh crap, I just saw what forum I was posting in.:headbang:

Just to let you both know as long as you can provide receipts that you had it done or did it yourself, that usually is good enough.

Thanks, Dave.

That's what I thought, but then I got to wondering if they'd say "A receipt for oil and a filter doesn't prove you put it in this truck."

I Guess it doesn't prove it's there but it's better than having no "paper trail" at all and if Fords happy with it so be it.
