Truck bed liner options help please.

So, I want to spend a little time cleaning up the truck bed....there are no rust holes in it, but being in the elements for the last 2 years after being garaged for 38 is really doing a quick rust job on my bump (a little bit of rust on it now)....frame is super solid and I want to mess with that later also.

I've been looking at Eastwoods options for a roll on liner and they have some pretty cool chemicals for rust encapsulating and rust proofing:

Por 15 paint over:
http://www.eastwood.com/por-15-black-rust-paint-quart.html

Rust converter:
http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-rust-converter.html

This is just what I'm thinking.

Do I treat it first?

Do I just sand it down and use the liner kit only?

Do i treat it and then put the liner kit on it?

To do a really good job you could sand it, rust convert it, then resand after the rust conversion is done, then clean it up with some mineral spirits or something of that nature and then finally coat it with the liner.

I'd cut out and patch an problem areas...then undercoat the bed with POR...and I had the guys that painted Red do a textured paint in the bed. I ended up throwing a plastic bed liner for when I haul heavy loads with it...seems to protect from dents better.

How bad is the bed. A few pics would be very helpful as to the course of action needed.
If it is all surface just use the eastwood encapsulation product then paint.
you could clean most of the rust if minor surface with sand paper or spray a little muratic acid to remove the rust. it can be bought at any big hardware chain they use it to etch and clean concrete.

This sounds like a plan.

There are no major problem areas....will get a pic today or tomorrow....raining. Rookie mistake!

Similar to Evan's suggestion....sounds like a plan.

Most of the rust inhibiter's like por 15 , want the roughness to help the product stick.

So, Mark, does this mean you might suggest just painting on the Por15 straight onto the bed as is?....after I clean up any dirt and such of course.

^ That's what the instructions say. Brush off the loose rust and paint it on.
Doesn't say much for what the inside of the bed would look like. Might be alright for underneath.

Just a thought, but here's somthing I saw once upon a time. A guy I knew used an epoxy type paint, and mixed walnut shell from media blasting to give it a rough edge for traction, no slip. Not flexible like most bedliners, but hard as hell and looked great, worked great. I don't know how it held up over time, last time I saw it it was about 5 years old and doing good.

I've also thought about using the roll in bed liner you get at the parts house (dura liner or such), then sprinkling sand on it before it dries. After the bedliner dries, hose the excess sand out out. Should make it stronger and give you a good no slip surgace.

Just a thought, might go well with POR15.

Here's some pics of the bed....I was all dressed up when I took this pics this morning and didn't want to climb in and move the tires...these are my new tires by the way and now I can get rid of those stupid thornbirds!

Hard to tell with this pic, but basically, the back of the bed that is up against the cab is basically what the entire bed looks like. It's in decent shape:

That's not bad at all!
A would just hit that with a course scotch brite pad and throw some primer and paint on it.
Either paint or the roll in bed liner is all that needs. I don't know if I would use POR15 for that application as it would have to be painted over either way. Due to the fact it breaks down in UV light.
A good coat of paint will block a the moisture reaching the bed surface so I feel POR15 is unnecessary for this.

Dang Ken...that's not rust, that's barely even character. Like Randy said, I'd scuff it up...then lay down some paint/bed liner
