Transfer case/Transmission questions

Alright fellas...I've got a newbie question pertaining to transfer cases and transmissions. Alright the C6 I picked up to swap in to the Bronco had a transfer case hooked to it. I didn't pay any attention to it because I wasn't interested in it. Well, when I noticed my NP205 in the Bronco was leaking a bit, I decided I might as well just go ahead and swap in the 'new' C6 and transfer case...assuming it was a 205. Well I got to looking at the tcase...and it doesn't really look like the 205. This combo I got was hooked to a 460.

So does anyone know off the top of their head what potential t-cases could have come with this combo? It was suggested to me, this was potentially a 208.

Secondly, if I decide to just re-seal my 205, will I have any issues mating to the transmission? I'd rather have the 205, I just don't know if there would be any issues with the output from the new transmission. If there is, what needs to be swapped from my old transmission?

If I recall correctly the drive shaft ends are different between the transfer cases. You are better off and money ahead to reseal the original transfer case.

Yes, the cases will swap out no problem.......If the case is bigger than the 205 I'd say it was a 203......the 208 IIRC is an aluminum case.

Yeah...I didn't know if I could just swap yokes. But I'm planning on keeping my 205...I just didn't know if a 4x4 C6 was a 4x4 C6 was a 4x4 C6. Eric mentioned in another thread that the output spline count was the same, so I should be good.

The spare case is actually narrower.

The 205 is a gear drive transfer case far superior to the 203 chain drive. Just reseal yours.

Planning on it. I just needed to know if any 'Ford' tcase mated to a C6 would be capable of swapping.

Thanks Bill.

Yes.

To add a bit more info to this for in case you need it some year... if you are swapping the t-case, then yes anything from another C6 will swap for the most part.

Some potential problems may come if you try to swap a 203 out and put a 205 in as the adapter (between trans and t-case) has a notch in it for the shift linkage of the 205, but the 203 adapter does not have this notch. Another thing about the C6 and it's adapters is that there were 2 different lengths of output shafts and adapters used, with about a 3" difference in length between the two. This is important if you ever need to swap out the transmission or adapter for any reason.

I have seen three different adapters: long for 205, short for 205, and long for 203.

I've never messed with a Ford 208... so there may be a whole different set of rules for them.

Alright...I came to a fork in the road. I was at my buddy's shop. There was a guy there from a local tranny shop. He took a look at my original C6. He said the inside was impeccable, drum was good, bands were good etc. He made a band adjustment, threw the tranny back in and it brought back first, second and reverse. However, the 2-3 shift would still only come in at gobs of throttle or if I was off the throttle. His suggestion, after an inspection of the inside and how the transmission came back, that a) there's now a chance the trans will come back on it's own and if it doesn't, b) my issue was with the valve body...and that a shift kit would more than likely be the fix.

Seeing as I'm completely transmission ignorant, I took his suggestion (because I can always swap in the other transmission next weekend if need be). So does anyone have any thoughts on the 'tranny guys' suggestion?

Dont mess with autos but it sounds like he knows what hes talkin about. If a mild shift kit would fix it then itd be worth a shot to me rather than swappin em out.

Bump for any other thoughts or opinions.

Beats me, but I've had a shift kit or different valve body in any auto trans I've ever had... so I'd do a shift kit anyway, even if it didn't need it. I have no idea if it will fix the problem or not.
