Trans ?

I have a 85 F150 with a AOD trans. We went to change the fluid for the second time and it has sat more than anything. I am trying to figure out the black stuff in the pan the fluid was not burned and still looked new from the last time we changed it and the first time we changed it was after the truck sat for 3 years and the fluid looked great.

There are no metal shavings and the black stuff felt very smooth. Here are 2 pictures.

I can't tell but is there a magnet in that pan? If not you should put one in. The black stuff is usually friction material, it is fairly normal with higher milage trannys. How does it shift? If theres no metal and it shifts fine I wouldn't worry about it.

It Shifts Fine. And no it doesn't have a magnet inside,if it doesn't hurt anything I can put one on the outside of it.

Dave's got it right. Its probably just varnish and small particle buildup.....no worries!
