Customer says his truck wont run. Codes are for #2#4#6#8 cyl contribution. Power balance shows a misfire on #8 gradually including misfires of #6#4#2, in that order. Oasis shows recent replacement of #8 injector. OK inspectors, whats your next step?

The low cylinder contribution on #2,#4,#6,#8 (same bank) indicate that it is either a fuel problem or an electrical problem. The electrical problem can be checked and ruled in or out. If electrical is okay, it leaves a fuel problem and thus the ballon test diagnostic.

Since the power balance test indicates the problem starts at #8 cylinder and that oasis shows #8 injector recently changed i would suspect a problem with the new injector, probably mis-installed resulting in a leak around the #8 injector seals.

Balloon test is used to check for leaking combustion gasses through the injectors. Either caused by and injector that has failed internally or the injector is loose. The combustion gases leak into the high pressure fuel system resulting in misfire and loss of power. If the injectors are loose long enough the gaskets can fail causing the injector to leak fuel into the cylinder resulting in hydrolock.

Blackhat's got it! If the injector's loose, combustion gasses get into the fuel rails, sequentially causing each injector to fail. TURBO?.........You're a sick puppy, Dave!

Vince & Dave,

Have either one of you heard of or used the method of removing the secondary fuel filter, partially filling the secondary filter housing with fuel, then with the ignition switch in the off position and using a remote starter button cranking the enging over while holding the plunger down in the secondary fuel filter housing and looking for combustion gas bubbles escaping back thru the housing?

I have heard this method works better for detecting small leaks that are sometimes difficult to see with the balloon test.

I've heard of it, but I've never had to use it. All of my problem trucks have been easy to see.

I've never used that method either. To be honest have only done the baloon deal once, I figure if you have one dead bank starting with one injector then the rest follow, i'll usually change all injectors on that one side. Once there starved for fuel they don't last too much longer.

so running out of fuel is a bad thing

Yes it is extremely hard on the injectors. So is not changing the fuel filters at the required intervals.
