Dad had a '79 Fiesta when I was little...

I'd buy one just for the name on the tailgate...

Well the Smart car as well as several others r sell like nuts here. Sooner or later the big 3 will realize that city dwellers as well as country commuters are starting to go for MPG instead of size.

If they threw a flat bed on back 4ft ish long that could handle 300lbs It be a good tool hauler for the MPG.

Hell, the european focus (the good one) has the TDCI engines that do 55mpg easy... they dont bring those over here either...

Don't forget European crash standards are more stringent than the US standards these days. I'm not sure that car is unsafe at all.

This paragraph sez it all though"

"The question, of course, is whether the U.S. ever will embrace diesel fuel and allow automakers to achieve sufficient scale to make money on such vehicles. California certified VW and Mercedes diesel cars earlier this year, after a four-year ban. James N. Hall, of auto researcher 293 Analysts, says that bellwether state and the Northeast remain "hostile to diesel." But the risk to Ford is that the fuel takes off, and the carmaker finds itself playing catch-up—despite having a serious diesel contender in its arsenal."
