t-case hard shift...

We got a little bit of snow tonight, headed out to go play at a buddy's in the Bronco, and the darn 205 did not want to shift out of 2Hi. I worked it a bit and finally got it in to 4Hi, but shifting in and out of any gear was difficult at first, but got progressively easier as the night went on, still more effort than it has been in the past though. The Bronco has seen maybe 250 miles in the last year. Is this a case of just needing to grease up the linkages or a deeper problem???

There isn't a whole lot to lube on the linkage, just a couple of pivot points. The shifter rods get lubed internally..have you checked the fluid level in the T-Case?

Dunno what the deal was last night...this morning shifting out of curiosity, it was just fine.

The 2 shift rods that slide in and out of the case might have been gummed up.

Might be able to pull the cover off inside the cab and look at the rods. I lost one of the pins one time and was able to reinsert it from the top.

Cold can make them a little more stiff. And, if you had snow, I assume it was fairly cold. You probably don't get real cold temps too often where you live so maybe this is something you just haven't had to deal with much?

Thanks for the info fellas.

The 2 shift rods that slide in and out of the case might have been gummed up.

Also check slop in the linkages. If the rods aren't moving in the correct sequence it could get hard to shift.

This is more along the lines of what I was thinking is going on, especially considering it shifted pretty normal this morning. Haven't used the tcase in over a year in that rig.

Possibly, usually only time that tcase gets used is around mud or sand.

from my experiences with this issue.i can go from 2hi to 4hi or 4lo with no prolblem, its going back from 4lo 4hi to 2hi after driving that seems difficult to do.what i did was back the vehicle up about 10 ft & walla back in it went.I also shift into 4 hi at least once a week or more to keep things lubed up when driving the rig.havent had an issue since.

Thanks for the info...I tried alot of different methods to get it to shift initially, moving a couple feet forward at a time and then backward, tried it creeping, tried in P/N and as stated D. It literally took me about 15-20 mins to get it to shift out of 2hi the other night. But as I mentioned...all seems to be good now.

sounds like it may have been partially dry Ben,then from all the moving around you did greased everything back up.it is a common issue especialy when the vehicles sit for a time.
