Swapping rear axle.....questions....

Ok here we go..

Since my 78 1 ton is sitting idle right now, with a broken U bolt and no exhaust, and my 77 is the one saddled with towing my camper i was wondering....would it be possible to take the rear end out of my 78 (it has 4.30 gears i believe, i know there atleast 4.10's), and put under my 77 (which has 3.07's), and then take the 77 rear and put back under the 78?? Here are the issues im wondering about....

1- The 78 is a Dually 1 ton, the 77 is a 3/4ton SRW, would that be as simple of a matter as putting the rims and tires off the 77 on the 78s rear....and vise versa??

2- The 77 has shocks and stablizer bar, the 78 has neither....will this pose a problem? Or could i just weld shock mounts on the 78 rear?

3- Are the U joints the same?

The reason im wanting to do this is simply so the 77 tows my camper better, and the dually with the few mods and the 4sp transmission would prolly still have decent grunt even with the 3.07's.....i believe the 77s rear is a Dana 61 and the Dually is a Dana 70....ifthat makes a difference....

I also should add that both trucks are 2wd so thats not an issue, and while it would be eaiser to just fix the 78 and tow it with that the ol lady would never go with me and the 78 has no working gauges (including gas gauge, which bugs me, cant figure out whats a matter with it), ad my brake controller and everything is already on the 77....

thanks!

I`m thinking the spring mounts may not match up, but a tape measure will tell you for sure. Cab and chassis trucks have narrower frame rails than SRW styleside trucks, but I don`t if that matters as far as your 77 2wd.

As for the Dana 61, those were made special to be able to use high gears, but it`s been so long since I`ve read anything about them that I don`t remember what differences there are.

I think the 61's were semi floating as well.

It has outer hubs like a floater....im pretty sure its a floater....

Im thinking i might just go to the junkyard and find another 70s 3/4 ton and pull the rear from that, How rare are 3.73's in these trucks? I feel like that would give me the best balance of power and economy.
