starting problems

Here's the deal I have an 84 4X4 with a 302 that I have recently had the heads rebuilt and installed a Performance Pro Intake. Now every time I take it down the road and the engine gets warm it wants to die when I turn a corner or come to a stop. I crank it over and it cranks real slow and will not start until it cools off. I was told to replace the coil so I did no help. Battery is new and alternator works good as well. Any help will be appreciatted.

You got headers? Excessive heat from headers will make a starter seize until it cools down. Timing issues will contribute to poor hot starting as well. Carb problems will be the place to start for the dying issue. Concentrate on your "dashpot".

With the excess heat from a 'hotter' engine, perhaps fuel boil or increasing temps to the few electronics that are under the hood. Hard restarts would either be caused by heat soak on the starter or the timing is too far advanced, which could also cause the excess heat.

I prefer heat shields because the wraps seem to tend to hold moisture and contaminants that will damage/rust the header.

With a dragging starter I'd say you've probably isolated the problem.

Otherwise I'd suspect the dist IF 84 used the same TFI ignition module the 86's used - or was TFI specific to EFI?

When I first put the 460 in my 87 with Hedmans it would wreck the starter fast. I got a starter blanket from Summit that fixed that problem. There wasn`t room for a shield on my app. It fixed the problem though. Make sure the connections and cables are good on your starter also. Can`t speak for everyone, but I`ve never had a heatsoak issue on these trucks with a small block and long-tubes, but it has been known to happen.
