so lost

i have a 96 f150 xlt 4 wheel drive 5.0 . the truck started idling high about 1500-1800 rpm. then it started dying when i stopped . now it will start idle rough then level out at 1500 rpm after it gets up to operating temp.but as soon as i put it in gear it dies and the smell of gas is very strong and i have to wait up 45 mins before it will start again. i have replaced egr ,mass flow, fuel pressure regulator and i forgot the name but it's the sensor on the throttle body i have also cleaned the throttle body with spray cleaner from gunk .this my first ford i have ever owned and i am frustrated that i cant figure this out . so if any of yall have any inkling whats going on i thank you now for any and all advice that yall got

thanks

Wow, that really sucks, 1st. :/

Where you at? :)

How long you had that truck?

What was going on around the time it changed to running like this?

All I got is the '91 Ford Shop Manuals so my troubleshooting algorithms
won't work for your '96 with Mass Air. :/

But seems to me that's what it's going to take, following the book step
by step. IMO, it'll be the cheapest and most sure fire way to fix it. :)

i would think of vac leak or you might mis compression on some cylinders since it idles high don't think it'll be exhaust is plugged but if you take it of you can try that.

pull the codes.. easiest way to start.. and your truck being a 96 you can go to any parts store and have them pull the codes being your truck is OBD2..

theres 3 things i can think off to start without codes..

1. Vacuum leak
2. Throttle Position sensor not being at correct voltage at idle
3. Bad ECU < this one is something that is kinda hard to figure out..

went to parts house and had them hook up the diagnostics computer and was throwing egr valve bad so replaced it. and still was throwing same code when i went back thats when it just died. had to have it towed back home and has been sitting since .i have had the truck for 8 months in that time the lock outs went bad it chunked the drive shaft .transfer case started leaking ,and the starter went out. im just about ready to torch it and go back to morpar.

That's dumber than hell. :/

Sell it! :)

Somebody could use it for -parts- to fix some other piece of crap Ford. xD

moRpar? LOL :)

Attention to detail is the difference between a job being done right and
a child -pretending- he's a mechanic.

Alvin in AZ wired RR signals, and so, knows a job can be done 100% right.
